Earth layers
core
Innermost layer of earth. Eath has outer core (liquid) and inner core (solid). Not chemically distinct from each other, but chemically distinct from mantle. Core mainly composed of nickel and iron.
Crust (compositional layer)
Oxygen, silicon, aluminum, and iorn
Asthenosphere (mechanical layer)
ToMoves under lithosphere, pushing and pulling plate tectonics
mesophere
betheath asthenosphere. lower mantle, where, material still flowes buut at much slowere rate than asthenosphere
lithosphere
contains crust and upper portion of mantle
twho tye[es pf [;ates
continental plates, oceanic plates
wgat causes lithospheric plates to move
convection
Layers of the Earth
crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
three compositional layers
earth is composed of three different layers, classificed by eliembts tgat make them (crust, mantle, core)
How do we know what earth looks like on inside
geophysical surveys (seismic data, gravity, magnetics, electrical, geodesy. Aquisition: land, air, sea and satellite Geological surveys: fieldwork, boreholes, mines
Mechanical layers
Earth has five different layers that move differently from one another (lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, inner core.
Athenosphere
Bellow lithosphere. VFlowes move like visscous fluod (not liquid) slightly melted plastics) covection happens. Convection currents push and pull lisosheric plates.
Types of layers of the earth
Compositional layers and mechanical layers
lithosphere (mechanical layer)
Crust and top layere of mantle. Plate tectonics.
Why these location for crust
Density
inner core
inner core of earth has temperature and pressures that squeed metals together and are not able to move about like liquid, but are forced to vibrate in place like a solid. Iorn and nickel.
core (compositional layer)
iorn, nickel, and ozygen
outer core
is comprised of liquid iron and nickle, surounds inner core, liquid
continental plates
land is above ocean. Made up mostly of granitic rock (granite formed from cooled lava/magma). Less dense than oceanic crust. (remember less dense things rise up)
mantle
largest layer of earth. Mantle is semi solid, not liquid. Convection happens in mantle.
continental crust
less thick and found abouve the oceans
layers form
lithosphere (solid) Upper mantle (semi solid) Lower mantle (semi solid) Outer core (liquid) inner core (solid)
lithospheric plates
lithosphere of earth is broken into many pices called plates. Plates loat on soft semi solid asthenosphere.
inner core
made of iorn and nickel, pressure causes solid ball at center of earth (inner core)
mesosphere (mechanical layers)
meterial still flowes but at much slowere rate than athenosphere
Oceanic plates
ocean water in above crust. very dense. Made up of basalt rock. more dense than continental crust (more dense things sink)
outer core
outer core is only liquid layer. nickel and iron. flow of liquid metals is responsible for earth's magnetic field.
Mantle (compositional layers)
oxygen, magnesium, silicon, and iron
crust is composed of
two rocks/types by denisty (continental crust and oceanic crust)
oceanic crust
under the ocean, thicker
Convection currents
warm stuff rises, cool stuff sinks. Veryy hot, less dense magma rises up. Magma cools closer to surface, condenses, become more dense and sinks
