A mixture has

the same properties as the element it was made out of. Ex. a mixture of iron and sulfide

a compound has

different properties to the element it was made out of.

A mixture can be separated by

physical means

pH scale

A range of values used to express the concentration of hydrogen ions (acid) in a solution

When an acid and a base combine through a neutralization reaction, a

salt is formed

atom is the

smallest particle of an element that can still be the element. Ex. Carbon

pH scale ranges from

0 (most acidic) to 14 (most basic) 7 being neutral

which is the most acidic?

Battery Acid

Bases are

bitter and slippery

a molecule is

two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds

heterogeneous mixture

A mixture that is evenly distributed. components are not evenly distributed throughout the mixture

What is the difference between an element and a compound?

An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into different substances. In the case of water, the elements are hydrogen and oxygen. Because water is made of more than one element, it is called a compound. A compound is formed when two or more elements combine chemically.

Ionic Compounds

An ionic compound forms when atoms bond by gaining or losing valence electrons. This type of compound usually forms between a metal and a nonmetal. A metal atom donates one or more electrons to a nonmetal. The result is a positively charged ion, called a cation, and a negatively charged ion, called an anion. The cation and anion are joined by an ionic bond.

What is the difference between a pure substance and a mixture?

Matter is a pure substance when it is made of only one kind of atom or molecule. Elements are pure substances because each element is made up of a single kind of atom. Unlike a pure substance, a mixture is made up of many different kinds of atoms and molecules. Mixtures form when two or more substances combine physically but not chemically.

homogeneous mixture

a mixture that is components are evenly distributed and not easily distinguished

A salt is

both acidic and basic in nature. Its properties depend on the acid and the base that are combined to make it.

Water is a compound because it

can be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen and has a fixed composition

Carbon dioxide is a compound because it

can be broken down into oxygen and carbon and has a fixed composition

Properties of compounds are...

different from the properties of the elements that make them up.

difference between elements and compounds is that.....

elements are made of only one thing, but compounds are made of more than one thing. Compounds are acombination of elements.

A compound is defined as a pure substance:

formed when two or more elements chemically combine to form bonds between their atoms.

covalent compound

forms when atoms bond by sharing electrons. This type of compound usually formsbetween two or more nonmetal elements. Each atom in acovalent compound shares one or more electrons with a neighboring atom, forming a covalent bond.

Element

is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into differentsubstances.

compound

is formed when two or more elements combine chemically.

An element is defined as a pure substance that:

is made from one type of atom anand can not broken down into simpler components by chemical orphysical means.

Mixture

is made up of many different kinds of atoms and molecules.

if a compound does not react with an acid or a base, it is considered a

neutral compound

compound cannot be separated by ________

physical means

A compound is a

pure substance

Matter is a

pure substance when it is made of only one kind of atom or molecule.

Elements are

pure substances because each element is made up of a single kind of atom.

A compound is formed when

two or more elements combine chemically

Mixtures form when

two or more substances combine physically but not chemically. They keep the same characteristics as before.

compound is form when

when two or more substances chemically react to form a new substance that is different from the original one.

Acids are compounds that

yield hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. Acids are corrosive in nature, especially when in contact with metals.

Bases are compounds that

yield hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
