Energy Resources: Section 1-Fossil Fuels
Oil is usually found:
-Deep underground, -2 souces near the surface are tar sands and oil shale.
Combustion (or burning)
-Process of combining hydrocarbons with oxygen at high temperatures. -It releases light and heat energy.
Uses for fossil fuels:
Sources of energy for industry, transportation and homes.
Oil--Liquid fossil fuel
Called oil or petroleum. Oil is found in areas once covered by oceans.
Petrochemicals
Useful substances that come from oil and natural gas. Examples: plastics, fabrics, medicines, building materials
3 main fossil fuels are:
1. Coal 2. Oil 3. Natural Gas
4 types of coal:
1. Peat: soft, gives off smoke, but not alot of energy. 2. Lignite: called brown coal, has a woody texture and is low in energy.
Coal,continued
3. Bituminous : called soft coal, found deep in the earth, is the most abundant. 4. Anthracite: hard coal, brittle, made from pressure on bituminous coal. Is almost pure carbon.
Fossil fuels...
Are going to run out! Conservation is the best way to provide energy for the future.
Fossil Fuels
Formed hundreds of millions of years ago, from remains of dead plants and animals.
Natural Gas
Found in oil deposits. It is less dense than oil, so found above the oil.
Crude Oil
Must be refined to remove impurities.
Hydrocarbons
Substances that contain hydrogen and carbon.
Fossil fuels pollute
the air with sulfur and sulfur dioxide.
