Phrase

A group of words that is used as a single part of speech and does not have both a verb and subject

Adverb phrase

A prepositional phrase that acts as an adverb and modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb.

Adjective phrase

A prepositional phrase that is used as an adjective and modifies a noun

Adverb clause

A subordinate clause that modifies an adjective, a verb, or another adverb. These tell how, when, where, to what extent, why, how much, or under what condition.

Adjective clause

A subordinate clause used as an adjective to modify a noun or pronoun. Relative pronouns begin these clauses.

Relative pronoun

Begins an adjective clause (which, that,who,whose, whom).

Subordinating conjunction

Begins an adverb clause (after, although, as, as if, as long as, as soon as, because, before)

Prepositional phrase

A group of words that begin with a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun

Coordinating conjunction

Do not use semicolons with these (FANBOYS)

Subordinate (dependent) clause

Does not express a complete thought but has a subject and verb. This cannot stand alone.

Independent (main) clause

Has its own subject and verb, expresses a complete thought, and can stand on its own as a sentence.

Semicolons

use when you connect two independent clauses that are not joined by FANBOYS
