sac passage 1 - Mrs Keith leaves
creative plan: In Jeans perspective themes: family, motherhood Order: Ma just as Keith leaves the house, reflecting on what she has dome to deserve this. loosing control of the kids, feeling like a failure having tried to hold family together since Tom died. dam kids, did Kip have to muck around, Connie should've known better Don't even have the energy to clip him round the ears. Connie cradling ma, reversal of roles. opening line: the thin walls shake, as the door is slammed behind her. My eyes follow her and see the darkness outside the window, mirroring the gloom inside the kitchen. Bare shelves, no food, no income, no future. themes: family, motherhood, poverty

sac passage 2 - Money concerns
creative plan: Jean location: kitchen at breakfast time themes: religion, reputation, gender roles - It's the end of the day and Ma is reflecting on how they'll make do without Tom's income. - Jean tries to hide the fear of reality from the kids. - reflecting on how to tell the kids they have some money due to St Ignatius church. - she'll tell them she has a new job in a big house in Kew, and that have a boarder coming, being Mrs Keith. - About how there's no way Kip will be leaving school, a person with such honour and reputation as myself cannot dare have that threatened. - Tom gave up everything for us to be halfway up the hill, and respectable people keep their children in school - Boys have to be educated and be able to support their family, whereas Connie will end up getting married and having kids, for her no schooling is necessary, she should focus on her housework. opening line: I wondered how long it would take before the kids started asking about money. There we were sitting quietly in the kitchen and then Kip had Francis up against the wall. Seems like they've finally realised. It's only been one week since Tom died...
Sac passage 4 - Ma learns Connie is pregnant
creative plan: Jean 20ish years later ma goes to visit Connie's grave and takes along flowers, - talks to connie and reflects on life without Connie. - Ma feels guilt, surrounding whether she did the right thing or not, even though she had no choice. - how it would've ruined their reputation, how hard Tom had worked to get us halfway up the hill, and how Connies act could've lead to the downfall of their rise in the world. - Getting rid of that baby was a sin in the eyes of god, but so was creating it in the fist place - I'd been there myself but was Connie punished because her baby came before marriage? - discuss how times have changed with abortions and views on society and acceptance of women - end it as Ma swings by the church and lights a candle for Connie and pray for her soul. Opening line: My connie would have been 40 today. I remember when she was a wee baby, and how she always did what she was told. she was different to the boys. Sac passage 3 - Kip vs Francis
creative plan: Kip next morning waking up. themes: family, reputation. - Kip wakes up in bed, with Francis on the floor - symbolising their status in society after last night. - the sheets loosen and stretch enabling Kip to leap out of bed - The sun peers through the window, signifying joy and a bright future. As Kip sees Francis he begins to reflect on last night and has a rant - the light blinds Francis as he covers his face in pa's old clothes. - Francis laying their in dirty worn clothes with the stench of alcohol and rot, both from his character and dirty clothes. - what kind of Westaway embarrass a women like that in public? Especially the one who is a lawyer. you'd think he of all people would know how important it is to hold up appearances. - Tom's death through alcohol - the sun continues to shine through, signifying hope and a bright future, as I recall placing it around her neck. - an idiot he called me, actually I feel like I'm brighter then anyone that went to law school. FINISH opening line: 25 pounds, why on earth did I commit to that? Why do I feel so happy that I did? then he rises from bed...
Sac passage 6 - Connie says goodbye to Jack
creative plan: jack on the train. themes: family, masculinity and expectations, religious divide Opening line: As I jostle my way to the window I think about how I got here in the first place. Khaki uniform, swag over my shoulder, one of hundreds heading off to war. You'd think we'd have learnt from the last one. Jack reflecting on why he's going to war - the old diggers calling me a coward - feeling guilt towards his ageing parents on leaving them, but also can't wait to get away from his controlling mother. - the say this is a great adventure, but the adventure I want is to be back racing the fields at the farm here I can breathe the fresh air. - And then he reflects on connie, the girl next door, with more then a fence separating them also religion and social status. and how lucky she is to have grown up with other kids in the family. - train whistle blows and theres still no sign of her in the crowd. - he makes out his name through defining farewells - turn his head to see Connie and her kid brother Kip, and how lucky she is to have grown up with other kids. - the camera flashes and I loose sight of Connie as the train departs.
