Naming Binary Acids:

A binary acid is an aqueous solution of a compound containing hydrogen and a nonmetal element. The chemical formula always begins with H, for example, HF(aq). Binary acids are named by using the prefix "hydro-" before the nonmetal element stem and adding the suffix "-ic acid. For example, HC(aq) is named hydrochloric acid. Name, or write the formula of the following binary acids: HF(aq), hydrofluoric acid

Naming Binary Molecular Compounds:

A binary molecular compound is composed of two nonmetal elements. The first element in the compound is named first using the parent name and the second element in the formula uses the stem of the parent name with the suffix "-ide" added. The number of atoms of each element is indicated by Greek prefi xes, with an exception being the prefix "mono-" is never used in naming the first element. For example, P4S7 is named tetraphosphorus heptasulfide.

Naming Ternary Acids:

A ternary acid is an aqueous solution of a compound containing hydrogen and an oxyanion. Again, the chemical formula always begins with H. Ternary acids are named as follows: if the oxyacid contains an oxyanion whose name ends in "-at e" then "-ic acid" replaces -ate in the ternary acid name. If the oxyacid contains an oxyanion whose name ends in "-it e", then "-ous acid" replaces " -it e" in the ternary acid name.

Naming Binary Molecular Compounds: A binary molecular compound is composed of two nonmetal elements. Write the name of the following binary molecular compounds: CO2

Naming Monoatomic Cations

Groups 1 and 2, and the aluminum (Al), cations are named for the parent metal followed by the word "ion". Transition metals often form more than one cation so it is necessary to include a Roman numeral in parentheses to indicate the charge of the cation. Copper, for example, can form either Cu+ or Cu2+. So the cation name for these cations would be the copper (I) and copper (II) ions, respectively.

Naming Monoatomic Anions

Nonmetal ions are named using the nonmetal stem plus the suffix "‐ide", followed by the word ion. For example, Cl‐ is named the chloride ion.

Write the chemical formulas for the following binary molecular compounds: phosphorous trichloride

Naming Polyatomic Ions

Polyatomic anions generally contain one or more elements combined with oxygen and are often called oxyanions. Some common oxyanions have a name ending with the suffix "‐ate". For example, the NO ‐ ion is the nitrate ion. You cannot "predict" how many oxygen atoms a particular "‐ate" ion will have. You typically have to either memorize them or look them up.

Write the chemical formulas for the following binary molecular compounds: disulfur hexaflouride

Write the chemical formulas for the following binary molecular compounds: disulfur hexaiodide

S2I6

Write the chemical formulas for the following binary molecular compounds: octaselenium pentoxide

Write the chemical formulas for the following binary molecular compounds: silicon dioxide

Si02

Anions derived by adding one or two H+ ions to the oxyanion are named by adding the word "hydrogen" or "dihydrogen" respectively before the name of the anion.

The total charge on the resulting anion will increase by +1 for each H added.

(NH4)3PO4

ammonium phosphate

Different prefixs are used when a series of oxyanions extends to 4 members

as with the halogens., The prefix "per‐" indicates one more oxygen atom than the "‐ate" ion. The prefix "hypo‐" indicates one less oxygen atom than the "‐ite" ion.
