Excel - Section 3
Line Chart
A data series is a related set of data points. It is usually one row of data in an Excel worksheet with the associated column headings; or one column of data with the associated row headings. All chart types can plot both single and multiple data series except the Pie Chart - as you will see shortly.
Data Series
A row or column of numbers that are plotted in a chart is called a data series. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. To create a column chart, execute the following steps. 1. Select the range A1:D7.
Scatter Chart
A scatter plot is a set of points plotted on a horizontal and vertical axes. Scatter plots are important in statistics because they can show the extent of correlation, if any, between the values of observed quantities or phenomena (called variables).
Area Chart
An area chart is a line chart with the areas below the lines filled with colors. Use a stacked area chart to display the contribution of each value to a total over time. To create an area chart, execute the following steps. 1. Select the range A1:D7.
Chart Title
An axis on a chart or graph in Excel or Google Spreadsheets is horizontal or vertical line containing units of measure. The axes border the plot area of column charts (bar graphs), line graphs, and other charts.
Horizontal Axis
An axis on a chart or graph in Excel or Google Spreadsheets is horizontal or vertical line containing units of measure. The axes border the plot area of column charts (bar graphs), line graphs, and other charts. ... the horizontal axis - more commonly known as the x or category axis
Vertical Axis
An axis on a chart or graph in Excel or Google Spreadsheets is horizontal or vertical line containing units of measure. The axes border the plot area of column charts (bar graphs), line graphs, and other charts. ... the horizontal axis - more commonly known as the x or category axis.
Chart
An embedded chart is a chart object that can be inserted into a worksheet. A chart sheet is a chart that is a sheet of its own. To insert an embedded chart use the Insert option within Excel or the spreadsheet program you are using.
Conditional formatting
Conditional formatting is a feature of Excel which allows you to apply a format to a cell or a range of cells based on certain criteria. For example the following rules are used to highlight cells in the conditional_format.py example: worksheet.
Column Chart
Data that is arranged in columns or rows on an Excel sheet can be plotted in a column chart. In column charts, categories are typically organized along the horizontal axis and values along the vertical axis. Column charts are useful to show how data changes over time or to show comparisons among items.
Function
Formulas in Excel are useful to perform various mathematical, statistical, and logical operations. You can type in a formula (though you have to be sure it's exactly right) or you can use Excel's preset formulas called functions.
Bar Chart
Horizontal rectangles (bars) chart in which the length of a bar is proportional to the value (as measured along the horizontal axis) of the item (entity or quantity) it represents. Also called bar graph, it is used commonly to compare the values of several items in a group at a given point in time.
Legend
In a chart or graph in spreadsheet programs such as Excel, the legend is most often located on the right hand side of the chart or graph and can sometimes be surrounded by a border. The legend is linked to the data being graphically displayed in the plot area of the chart. The legend is also known as a Chart's Key
Formula
Using formulas in spreadsheets can allow you to quickly make calculations and get totals of multiple cells, rows, or columns in a spreadsheet. In the picture below is an example of a Microsoft Excel formula =SUM(A$1:A$3), which adds the total of cells A1,A2, and A3.
Table
You can create your own defined name, and Microsoft Office Excel sometimes creates a defined name for you, such as when you set a print area. Table name A name for an Excel table, which is a collection of data about a particular subject that is stored in records (rows) and fields (columns).
Pie Chart
a graphic representation of quantitative information by means of a circle divided into sectors, in which the relative sizes of the areas (or central angles) of the sectors correspond to the relative sizes or proportions of the quantities. Also called circle graph, pie graph. Origin of pie chart Expand
