cell style

A defined combination of formatting characteristics—such as number, alignment, font, border, and fill.

Data marker

A dot, a bar, or a symbol used to represent one number from the worksheet.

Auto Fill

A feature that can be used to automatically fill in worksheet data in any direction.

range

A group of cells.

Fill handle

A little black square in the lower-right corner of the selected cell.

Functions

Built-in formulas that enable you to perform complex calculations easily.

Columns

Cells that display vertically and are labeled from left to right beginning with A through Z, then AA through AZ, and so on.

Sheet tab

Displays the name of each sheet in the workbook.

Chart

Graphic representation of worksheet data.

Worksheet

Grid with columns and rows where you enter and summarize data.

Error value

Indicates when a formula you have entered results in an error.

Vertical axis

Line on chart used for plotting values, also called Y-axis.

Horizontal axis

Line on chart used for showing categories, also called X-axis

Legend

List that identifies the patterns or colors of the data series or categories in a chart.

Name Box

Located below the Ribbon and displays the cell reference of the active cell.

Formula Bar

Located next to the Name box and displays the value or formula of the active cell.

Drag-and0drop method

Method to move or copy a selection to a new location to a new location in your worksheet.

Constants

Numbers entered directly into formulas that do not change.

Absolute Reference

Permanent reference to a cell; does not change in relation to the location of the formula.

Data source

Range of cells that contain the data for the chart.

Chart sheet

Separate sheet in a workbook containing a chart.

Formula

Set of instructions used to perform calculations on values in a worksheet.

Drawing objects

Shapes, curves, or lines that are part of your worksheet.

Order of operations

Specific sequence used to calculate the value of a formula.

Active Cell

The cell that is selected in a worksheet.

cell reference

The column letter followed by the row number that identifies a cell, such as B5.

Font

The design of a set of letters and numbers

Cell

The rectangle where a column and row intersect.

Relative reference

The reference to a cell that changes in relation to the location of the formula.

Spreadsheet software

Used to calculate, analyze, and visually represent numerical data.

Font style

Variations in the shape or weight of a font's characters.

Workbook

Embedded chart

a newly created chart that is saved as a graphic object and is saved as part of the worksheet.

Mixed reference

Gridlines

lines extending from the vertical or horizontal axes across the plot area of a chart.
