Food Chains
Organism
A living thing no matter how minute or gigantic. Ex: Ringworm/Nematode, Humans, Blue whales, and anything else that lives.
Photosynthesis
A process of which producers use to make their own food, Photosynthesis is when the energy from the sun gets collected in a plants chlorophyll and it produces oxygen and sugar, it releases the oxygen, meanwhile it takes in the sugar. This process is the most important throughout the whole food chain and web, this process is powered by the sun.
Consumer/heterotroph
An animal that gets it's energy by eating other things such as producers/autotrophs.
Prey
An animal that is killed and eaten by another predatory animal that eats it, usually these animals have/ adapt ways to survive such as camouflage.
Predator
An animal that preys on other animals usually smaller than itself, Lion:warthog, Snake:Deer.
2nd/level consumer
An organism that eats the 1st level consumers, such as eagles, hawks, wolves, snakes, etc.
1st/level consumer
An organism that eats the producer, such as deer, hippo, fly.
Producer/autotroph
An organism that uses the sun's energy to that make it's own food, the trophic levels of this type of organism has 100% of the energy. Producers play the most important role/niche in the food chain. Examples that play this niche in the food chain are green plants, trees, algae, etc.
Herbivore
Animal eats only producers/plants. Deer,gnat,bat,etc.
Carnivore
Animal eats strictly meat.
Scavenger
Animals that eat the remains of other animals, rotten meat, etc.
Decomposer
Breaks down dead organisms by converting them to simple nutrients, examples are fungi, mushroom, etc.
Omnivore
Organism that eats both meat and plants. Ex:Racoon, crocodile, shark, etc.
Tertiary/Apex/3rd level consumer
Top of food chain. doesn't have to worry about other species eating them. EX:Crocodile, human, Orca.
Food chain
cycle of where the energy from each animal is born/who eats who.
Food webs
overlapping food chains that are all in the same ecosystem.
