Summarize the distinguishing features of Cnidaria

Cnidarians are radially symmetrical, have tentacles, and are diploblastic.

Describe three unifying characteristics of arthropods

Arthropods have segmented bodies, joined appendages, and exoskeletons. They are also all bilaterally symmetrical.

Identify gills in squid and clam, and its function

Gills aid in gas exchange and respiration in marine animals.

Identify adductor muscle in clam and its function

Adductor muscles in clams aid in opening and closing the valves or shells.

Summarize the distinguishing features of Annelida

Annelids are bilaterally symmetrical, coelomates, have a body wall, nervous system, segmented organs, and developed circulation and respiratory structures.

Summarize the distinguishing features of Arthropoda

Arthropoda have exoskeletons, segmented bodies, joined appendages, bilaterally symmetrical, and open circulatory system.

Describe unifying characteristics of mollusks and give examples from each of the four groups

Chitons are marine, have shells and an oval body, and are sessile. Bivalves have two-part shells and siphons (clams, scallops). Gastropods can be aquatic and terrestrial, have a flat foot, and a spiral shell (snails and slugs). Cephalopods have a cone-like mantle and modified feet-arms (squid, octopus)

What are the functions of the exoskeleton in arthropods?

Exoskeleton in arthropods are made out of chitin and it makes up the outer covering of the organism.

Compare and contrast the structural and functional features among different mollusks

Mollusks differentiate within the way they capture food, respire, move, and presence of shells.

Summarize the distinguishing features of Mollusca

Mollusks have a soft body that is protected by a shell, bilaterally symmetrical, have a radula, mantle, and a muscular foot.

Mollusks are characterized by a three-part body plan. What are the three parts?

Mollusks have three parts, which are foot, mantle, and visceral mass.

Summarize the distinguishing features of Platyhelminthes

Platyhelminthes are flatworms that are triploblastic, acoelomates, bilaterally symmetrical, parasitic, and flattened.

Identify radula in squid and its function (How about clam?)

Radula in squids help cutting prey. In clams it is used for scrapping food.

Why are sensory organs more prominent in cephalopods than in other classes of mollusks?

Sensory organs are more prominent in cephalopods than other mollusks because they are larger and active animals that need these senses to feed, attack prey, and reproduce.

Identify siphon in squid and its function

Siphons in squids help with locomotion, respiration, and discharge of wastes.

Summarize the distinguishing features of sponges (Porifera)

Sponges are multicellular, lack a cell wall, tissues, and organs, have no symmetry.

What are the four major groups of mollusks?

The major four groups of mollusks are chitons, bivalves, gastropods, and cephalopods.

In what ways would having a shell contribute to the evolutionary success of mollusks in their environment?

The shell protects the soft body of the mollusks by protecting them from the predators.

What features of squid and octopuses help them adapt to a predatory lifestyle?

These organisms have tentacles that aid in capturing and trapping prey. They also have sharp beak that help with consumption of prey, as well as great eyes for color vision.

Give some examples on how the arthropods achieve survival success

They achieve survival success due to the hard covering that prevents from any harm and predators.

Compare the similarities and differences between arthropods and annelids

They are similar by having external segmentation, ventral nerve cord, dorsal cerebral ganglia, and segmented arrangements of muscles. However, they also have differences. Annelids have lots of legs, collagenous cuticle, and closed circulatory system. Arthropods have segmented appendages, chitinous cuticle, and open circulatory system.
