Geographic Tools Unit 2
2. Name two measurements from the reading that are smaller than a degree.
Two measurements that are smaller then a degree is a minuets and seconds.
Degrees
Degrees in broken down in minutes and seconds and that helps us measure the distance around the globe. Also each latitude and longitude line has a degrees on it.
Hemispheres
Hemispheres are the two side that are divided by the 0 degrees lines either on the latitude or longitude lines. If its cut by the prime meridian (longitude) line, then the two hemispheres are eastern and wester but if its cut on the equator (latitude) then the two hemispheres are northern and southern.
Parallels
Parallels are also known as the latitude lines that run east to west.
Prime Meridian
Prime Meridian is the 0 degrees. It divides the globe into eastern and western on the longitude lines. These longitude lines go from 0 degrees west to 180 degrees.
1. Name a culture from the reading that used math and logic to determine a general calculation of the size and shape of the earth.
The Greeks where the culture that used math and logic to determine a general calculation of the size and shape of the earth.
5. After watching the video on latitude and longitude, what is the absolute location of San Diego, CA.
The absolute location of San Diego, CA is 32 degrees 42' 54" north and 117 degrees 09' 25" west.
4. After watching the video on latitude and longitude, what is the approximate circumference of the earth?
The approximate circumference of the earth is 25,000 miles.
Equator
The equator is an invisible/imaginary line that marks 0 degrees on a globe or map. It divides the earth into the northern and southern hemisphere. The equator sits on the 0 degrees on the latitude lines.
3. Would traveling across 10 degrees of longitude at the Equator be the same distance, less distance, or a greater distance than traveling across 10 degrees of longitude at 75 degrees north latitude? Please explain your answer.
10 degrees of longitude at the Equator will be a greater distance then 75 degrees north latitude because the closest you are to the equator, the farther out the spaces of latitude and longitude get.
International Dateline
180° longitude is the line that is on the opposite side of the globe from the Prime Meridian. This line is where each new calendar day begins.
Meridians
Meridians are also called longitude lines. They are also drawing on the north and south.
