Gerund (object of the preposition to after: sitting is a noun)

After sitting home all day, I was bored.

present participle (crying: verb)

Crying, Martha reached for a tissue.

present participle (beginning is a verb)

I am beginning to enjoy country music.

Gerund (singing: subject)

Singing has always helped Sarah relax.

Gerund (staring: subject)

Staring at people is rude.

present participle (riding is a verb)

The boy was riding home.

present participle (interesting is an adjective because it's describing the movie)

The class watched an interesting movie.

Working is a gerund (it's the subject which means it's a noun). Scorching is a present participle (scorching is an adjective describing the sun).

Working under the scorching sun is tiring. (there's 2! )
