Describe why the discovery of America was one of the most important events recorded in the history of mankind, according to Adam Smith. (WHAT WERE SOME BENEFITS/MISFORTUNES OF THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA?)
Discovery of America was one of the two greatest events of history. Immense changes followed in old and new worlds, and these changes still effect us today. Since 1776 America's history made benefits and misfortunes. BENEFITS: European's trade, freedom to worship, own land MISFORTUNES: natives were conquered, slavers were sent from Africa, plantation slavery/unfree labor
One of the most striking features of Indian societies at the time of the encounter with Europeans was their diversity. Support this statement with several examples.
Each Indian group in America was very diverse; each group had its own political system and religious beliefs. To Indians, many Europeans were just another "tribe" to deal with.
Compare and contrast European values and ways of life with those of the Indians. Consider addressing religion, views about ownership of land, gender relations, and notions of freedom.
Europeans valued Christianity. They viewed religion as something promoting civilization. They owned land/property/goods. Men owned the house, women depended on men. Freedom is a moral condition to the Europeans. Indians valued Indian rituals/witchcraft. Animism was a form of making inanimate natural objects into gods. Women own dwellings, women were important in religious rituals. They shared goods, did not own land, but only the right to use it. Freedom was not in their vocabulary.
What were the main factors fueling the European expansion?
