Before writing ( argumentative essay)

-Brainstorm, -identify the main topics and ideas that support your argument , -use a logical research for organizing your notes , -plan and write an outline for your essay noting down the information that you will include in each paragraph

The essay

-each separate Point in your argument requires it's own paragraph -the purpose of each body paragraph should be to prove a part of your argument -your point should be articulated in the topic sentence of the paragraph and the rest of the paragraph should present evidence that supports the point

Offering a counter argument

Addressing the opposition demonstrates your credibility as a writer, it shows that you have researched multiple sides of the argument and have come to an informed decision, remember keep a balance tone when attempting to debunk the opposition

The thesis statement

In one or two sentences state your argument by taking one side of the issue be clear and concise -it is the most important sentence in your paper, -it also answers the question "what am I trying to prove?", - It also brings the focus to your entire essay this is a topic that has to be proven throughout your paper.

Structure of a classical argument

Introduction, thesis statement, background information, reasons and evidence, the opposing view and the rufutation and the conclusion

Argument

Is a specific kind of persuasion based on the principles of logic and reasoning -it involves the process of establishing a claim and then proving it with the use of logical reasoning examples and research

The goal of argumentative writing

Is to get the reader to it knowledge your side with logical facts evidence that supports and research

Concluding paragraph

It should restate the main claim present in one or two general sentences that summarizes your arguments

The body of the argumentative essay

Paragraphs of wanting to give clear arguments for your claim with examples statistics an exclamation, use transition words moving from paragraph to paragraph

Logos

Refers to the logic and reason used in an argument this means both the way an arguments is constructed and the information it contains -used deductive reasoning or inductive reasoning is. -be careful that you do not use faulty logic by overgeneralizing, a logical argument will also address the opposition

Paragraph three of the argumentative essay

Refutation paragraph , this is also used to support your claim use the counter arguments to show that your idea is the stronger one, do not focus on the opposing idea

Introduction paragraph

Start with the attention grabbing hook to introduce the issue, describe your argument and lead into your thesis

Ethos

means character and refers to the credibility of the speaker if your audience doesn't trust you trust you should be at your argument will fail -it is important to establish the speaker is wise and has good intentions, in many ways it is how the audience reacts to the speaker. examples:" as a weekly volunteer at Grace I know how important it is to support our local food bank" example :" as a long time resident of grapevine I can tell you the best place to spend a Saturday afternoon"

refers to the emotional appeal of an argument how will the audience respond to the argument, be careful not to base your argument to heavily or your audience will feel manipulated -examples: 'if you don't study for your finals you will fail the class' example "polar bears are threatened by global warning."
