How many chemicals are in tobacco smoke?
7,000
The cartridge in an e-cig contains what
A liquid solution of propylene glycol, glycerol, water, nicotine, flavors, and other chemicals
How it effects the digestive system
All forms of tobacco increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. Tobacco dulls the taste buds and can cause stomach ulcers. Tobacco used is linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, stomach, esophagus and pancreas
Long term effects
Bronchitis- damaged airways by which air travels to the lungs Emphysema- a person with emphysema uses most of their energy just to breath (most common cause of death for smokers) Lung Cancer-about 90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking Heart Disease-nicotine greatly increases the risk of heart attack or stroke Weakened Immune System-tobacco use harms the bodies defenses against various diseases and common illnesses (coughs, colds, allergies)
Name 5 of these chemicals and where else each of them can be found.
Cadmium-used to make batteries, lead-paint and changes the way the brain works especially in kids, arsenic-rat poison, benzene-oil and gasoline, formaldehyde
How it effects the excretory system
Chemicals from tobacco smoke are absorbed from the lungs into the blood and travel to the kidneys and bladder
What are cigars/pipes
Cigar smoke has 90x more cancer causing chemicals than cigarette smoke, they are made of shredded tobacco leaves cause some of the same problems as cigarettes more likely to get mouth lung and lip cancer 1 cigar contains as much nicotine and tobacco as 20 cigarettes
All of the tobacco products
Cigarettes, dip, hookah, cigar, e-cig
Short term effects of tobacco
Cravings- Nicotine leaves the body wanting more Breathing & Heart rate-heart rate & makes breathing during exercise difficult Taste & Appetite-tobacco dulls taste buds & appetite Unpleasant Feelings-dizziness Unattractive Effects-bad breath, yellow teeth, aged skin & smelly hair, skin & clothes
What are e-cigarettes
Don't contain tobacco but still has nicotine inside liquid nicotine is heated and users inhale the vapor same problems as cigarettes invented in 1960s

Explain how attitudes about cigarettes have changed over time. Use evidence for the Tobacco Timeline to support your answer.
In 1914-1918 doctors claim that cigarettes are beneficial to soldiers in WWI who are injured but then in 1930 12 years later scientists say that cigarettes cause cancer. Cigarettes were positive but in 1930 they became negative.
Nicotine
Increases heart rate addictive habit forming drug increases blood pressure reduces amount of oxygen your blood carries to the brain
What are ciggarettes
Most commonly used tobacco product it contains nicotine which is a highly addictive chemical smokers are at risk for lung diseases, heart disease, and cancer
How it effects the circulatory system
Nicotine makes the blood vessels constrict and harden=heart has to work harder to move blood, nutrients and oxygen through the body.
Explain why it can be difficult to stop using cigarettes, chewing tobacco or e-cigarettes once a person starts.
Once a person starts using any type of tobacco it is hard to stop because tobacco contains nicotine which is very addictive and can change the way brain signals are processed. Nicotine causes effects in your body and when the effects wear off people want more nicotine. When you stop it caused uncomfortable symptoms.

What is tobacco
Shrub like plant w/ large leaves that is grown throughout the world it contains harmful substances
How have smoking rates changed in the past 10 years? What do you think has caused this trend?
Smoking in people of all ages have decreased in the last 20 years the percentage of adult smokers is the lowest it has been since CDC began keeping track in 1965. I think it has decreased because people found out that smoking can cause cancer.
Just this year, the government began regulating the sale and labeling of e-cigarettes. Explain why you think the government wanted new regulations.
The government might have wanted new regulations because the US Food and Drug Administration showed that the labels on e-cigarettes did not always put the right amount of nicotine products.
What are three chemicals found in tobacco smoke that can cause cancer? Where else can each of these chemicals be found?
Three chemicals that are found in tobacco smoke that can cause cancer are lead, arsenic, and benzene. Lead can also be found in paint, arsenic can be found in rat poison, and benzene can be found in oil and gasoline.
Laws and regulations
Tobacco Taxes:Taxes are now added to each pack of cigarettes sold in the United States $1.00 federal excise tax added to each pack sold Additional taxes give the government more money to educate people about the dangers of smoking Smoke Free Environments:Ban on smoking in public places Protects non-smokers from secondhand smoke Some towns and cities have made it illegal to smoke in outdoor locations (playgrounds, gardens & beaches), each pack of cigs is more than $ in added health care costs
How it effects the respiratory system
Tobacco smoke contains tar which coats the inside of the lungs. Smoke damages thealveoli(tiny air sacs in the lungs) This makes lungs less able to supply oxygen to the body
How it effects the nervous system
Your brain needs oxygen! The carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke can cut down the amount that the blood carries to the brain.
Carbon monoxide
colorless odorless poisonous gas that is created when tobacco is burned harms the brain and heart by reducing amount of oxygen that is available to these organs
Tar
dark thick liquid that forms when tobacco burns covers airways and bronchi lungs covered with tar can become diseased and cause breathing trouble
COPD
emphysema and bronchitis
