Jerimoth Hill

Mount Sunflower

This is the highest mountain in Kansas, at 4,039 feet. It is located in the western part of the state, almost on the border with Colorado, and its summit is topped by a picnic table and a sculpture. Although it is referred to as a mountain, it is virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain as the state is extremely flat.

Mount Katahdin

This is the highest mountain in Maine, at 5,267 feet. It is located in the central part of the country in the Longfellow Mountains, and is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

Taum Sauk Mountain

This is the highest mountain in Missouri, at 1,776 feet. It is located in the southeastern part of the state in the St. Francois Mountains, and it and its neighbors are believed to have been one of the few areas never to have been submerged under ancient seas.

Mount Marcy

This is the highest mountain in New York, at 5,344 feet. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Adirondack Mountains, and is a popular destination for hikers.

White Butte

This is the highest mountain in North Dakota, at 3,506 feet. It is located in the southwestern part of the state, and it is a butte rising up from the flat Great Plains.

Mount Davis

This is the highest mountain in Pennsylvania, at 3,213 feet. It is located in the southern part of the country in the Allegheny Mountains, and it is situated in a gently sloping ridge. An observation tower lies at the summit of this mountain.

Black Elk Peak

This is the highest mountain in South Dakota, at 7,244 feet. It is located in the western part of the state in the Black Hills, and is the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains. This mountain is topped by a now-defunct fire tower.

Mount Mansfield

This is the highest mountain in Vermont, at 4,393 feet. It is located in the northern part of the state in the Green Mountains, and takes the shape of a human face when viewed from the east or west.

Britton Hill

This is the highest point in Florida, at 345 feet. It is located in the northwestern part of the state near the border with Alabama, and is the lowest high point of any state in the United States.

Black Mountain

This mid-20th century movement took place in rural North Carolina and was characterized by experimentation in free verse. The leaders of the movement promoted open forms and composition by "fields," and claimed that "the poem itself must, at all points, be a high energy-construct and, at all points, an energy-discharge." They believed that writing should be an organic process, and because there is a form in all things, writing poetry is a way to discover and reveal the order of an individual's experience.
