Why was annexing the Philippines controversial?
Some people believe that we should annex the Philippines and imperialism made us stronger and benefited the people of the imperialized country. Reasons for imperialism: spread American power, navy ports. Reasons against imperialism: violets American ideal of self government, immigration concerns. America eventually decided to annex the Philippines in 1899 with the goal of preparing the islands for independence. Filipinos were unhappy, Philippines eventually gained independence in 1946
