How do fossils form lesson 1
How do fossils form?
1. From dead plants or animals being buried by sediment that hardens and preserves remains. ex: bones, teeth, wood and shells
what can a trace fossil show?
1. give clues about animals ex. shows how an animal might have moved, what it ate, its size
Where and when was the first fossil of a dinosaur found?
1685, England
fossils
A perserved clue to life. The remains of living things that lived on earth long ago. Found most often in Sedimentary rock.
Where were the first dinosaur foot prints found?
In Connecticut by 12 year old boy.
mold
an imprint made by the outside of a dead plant or animal. Leaves a hollow space. Water slowly washes remains out of rock. and forms the imprint. ex: crab shell buried in sediments. Sediment gets pressed and squeezed into stone. Crab shell washes away and leaves hallow shape.
amber
an insect is trapped in the sap of an evergreen tree. The sap hardens to form a clear yellow material. The entire body if the insect is preserved.
what are some examples of trace fossils?
examples 1. tracks, footprints, burrows, droppings, and worm holes.
trace fossils
fossil that shows changes that long dead animals made in their surroundings or environment.
what was the first animal on earth?
fossils tell us that over 500 million years ago jelly fish were the first animals on earth.
petrified fossils (petri means stone)
fossils that form when minerals slowly take the place of original, once living material. ex: trees in the petrified forest national park. the wood is replaced by quartz
carbon film
leaf is buried in sediments. Sediments exposed to high heat. ., Chemicals evaporate. Thin black thing in shape of leaf remains.
what are some other ways fossils can form?
not all fossils are part of once- living things. some are traces. ex: 1. footprint, 2. a mineral filling the hallow of a rock
what kind of rocks are fossils found in?
sedimentary rocks. most fossils formed when dead plants or animals were buried quickly by sediments
cast
sediments and minerals that fill a mold and has the same outside shape as the original living thing. examples: A hallow space was left where a bone belonging to an ancient bird was buried.. Minerals filled space.
how is a fossil formed in tar pit?
they can preserve once living things. animals or plants get stuck because tar is sticky
How does a mold form?
water washes animal or plant remains out of a rock. the space left matches the shape of the once- living thing.
