How do materials move through plants?
Taproot system
A large root that grows straight down. It remains the largest root structure as the plant grows. A carrot is a example
Vascular
A system of tubes in certain plants that transport water and minerals.
What is an example of a stem you eat?
Asparagus
Fibrous root system
Many groups grow out in all directions and divide many times. Sometimes look like upside down version of the above ground branches.
What are the jobs of phloem and xylem?
Phleom transports sugar from the leaves to the roots. Xylem tansports water and minerals it contains from the roots upward to other parts of the plant.
Where is phloem made in trees?
Phloem is made just beneath the bark. When new phloem cells form and grow, they push old, dead phloem out forming the bark.
What are root hairs?
Root hairs are extensions of tiny root cells. Water enters the plant through these structures.
What is the food source of plants?
Sugar which is made in the plant's leaves. To make food the plant also needs water.
What are the functions of a plant's stem?
Support the plant's leaves or fruit and house the plant's vascular system.
What vascular tissue in plants transports water and disolved nutrients?
The xylem system.
Xylem
Tissue/tubes that carrie materials from the plant's roots to the leaves, like water and minerals.
Phloem
Tissue/tubes that carries sugar from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
What are the three functions of roots?
To anchor the plant in the ground. To hold it in place as it grows. Store food and absorb water from the soil which contain tiny amounts of nutirents and minerals.
