Integumentary System Functions
What are the seven functions of the integumentary system?
-protection -sensory perception -regulate body temperature -storage -absorption -excretion -production
-certain substances absorbed through skin but limit -ex:medications for motion sickness and heat disease that are placed on transdermal patches and applied to the skin
Absorption
-skin helps eliminate salt, and small amount of waste, excess water
Excretion
-skin produces vitamin D -combines sun's UV rays with skin compound
Production
-barrier for sun's UV rays -protects against invasion of germs -holds moisture in to prevent deeper tissue from drying out
Protection
-blood vessels in the skin help body retain or lose heat -dilate:blood vessels gets larger and allow excess heat to escape through the skin -constrict: blood vessels get smaller and retain heat -sudoriferous glands also help cool body
Regulation of body temperature
-nerves present in skin -respond to pain, pressure, temperatures, and touch sensations
Sensory perception
-skin has tissue for temporary storage of fat, sugar, water, vitamins, and salts -stores adipose tissue in the hypodermis, which is a source of energy
Storage
