Mnemonics using visual imagery were originally discovered by the Greeks over two millennia ago. In some studies on imagery in memory, researchers tell some individuals to use word-based techniques to study words, and tell others to form mental pictures representing the words. One man, called S, could memorize a huge quantity of information in a range of areas after a short and apparently easy glance. To succeed at this incredible ability, S used mental imagery a lot. But there is a difficulty. A lot of the imagery skills are difficult, and demand much mental effort to use, making them hard to use.

It has been traditional for the man rather than the woman to receive the check when a couple dines out. A researcher wondered whether this would be true if the woman was clearly in charge, asking for the wine list, questioning the waiter about dishes on the menu, etc. A large random sample of restaurants was selected. One couple was used in all restaurants, but in half the man assumed the traditional in-charge role, and in the other half the woman was in charge. To accomplish this fantastic feat, S relied heavily on mental imagery. There is a problem, however. Many of the imagery techniques are complex, require considerable cognitive resources to implement, and are therefore difficult to use spontaneously (Schacter, 2001).

One important way to remember new information is to use visual imagery, which means to think of a picture that shows the information. For instance, suppose a student wants to remember that his teacher spells her last name, Reaves, with an A, so that it is ReAves instead of ReEves. The student notices that it is spelled the same as Leaves, and pictures his teacher with leaves growing all over her. Past research has shown that mental imagery helps people remember words better than just thinking about the words themselves (Higbee, 1996). This technique is behind the amazing memory abilities of professional mnemonists (Schacter, 2001) and the case of S, a Russian newspaper reporter who could memorize almost anything instantly and remember it forever (Loftus, 1980). Why don't more people use imagery in their everyday memories? Because, while it works very well, it takes a lot of concentration and energy, and most people quit doing it after a while, when it isn't fun anymore (Schacter, 2001).

Not plagiarism and a good example

To accomplish this fantastic feat, S relied heavily on mental imagery" (Loftus, 1980, p. 3). "There is a problem, however. Many of the imagery techniques are complex, require considerable cognitive resources to implement, and are therefore difficult to use spontaneously" (Schacter, 2001, p. 34).

Empirical research has established a bystander effect occurs in helping situations. This effect refers to the finding that someone is less likely to help when other people are present compared to when the person in need is alone. Although the effect has been replicated in a variety of contexts, research has neglected to determine if this effect occurs in response to request for help via Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). This study investigated whether a CMC bystander effect exists. It was hypothesized that as the number of names on an email recipient list increased, the likelihood of receiving help decreased. 150 students were selected from a private Midwestern University and randomly assigned to receive an email that varied only in number of names that appeared in the address field of the email - either 0, 1, 2, 4, or 8 co-recipients. Self-efficacy is defined as a person's confidence in their ability to achieve a goal in a specific area (Schaler, 1995). Academic self-efficacy is a person's perception of their ability to do well academically. Many researchers, including Choi (2005), have determined that academic self-efficacy is a strong predictor of grades attained. Bandura (1994) stated that modeling behavior and mastery are components of self-efficacy. The present research explored the possibility of family mealtimes being a source for modeling interactions that may promote mastery of some behavior, such as academic issues. The hypothesis was that a significant positive relationship would be evident between quality of family mealtime discussions and self-efficacy, in general and academically. Upon consent, participants filled out a demographic form and three surveys which contained the areas of general self-efficacy, academic self-efficacy, and family mealtimes.
