Adequate Intake
The Adequate Intake (AI) is a recommended level of daily nutrient intake for healthy people that has been established based on data but the data does not provide the depth of information as that used to generate the RDA. It is used when there is insufficient information to establish an RDA.
Estimated Average Requirement
The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) is the amount of nutrient intake that is estimated to meet the need of half of the healthy members of a population group. It is the basis for the development of the RDAs and is used to evaluate the adequacy of nutrient intake for a population group.
Recommended Dietary Allowance
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the average daily amount of nutrient intake that will be ample to provide the requirement of almost all (97%‑98%) of the healthy people within the designated group.
Tolerable Upper Intake Level
The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is the highest daily amount of intake of a nutrient that is thought to be without risk of negative health effects to almost all of the members of the general population. There is an increasing risk of negative effects as the intake increases above the UL.
