Factory Development

The Industrial Revolution had produced many laborsaving devices and had started the development of new and faster means of distributing the goods these devices produced. As the consumer demand for these manufactured goods increased, however, methods of production had to expand to meet the rising need. The development of the factory system put a greater quantity of goods on the American market at a lower price. Before the Industrial Revolution, work was done at home or in a nearby workshop. Labor was done by hand or with the use of simple tools. With the development of new laborsaving devices came the switch from hand labor to machine labor. Dramatic changes in working conditions followed. Machines were nearly all too large and too expensive to keep at home. Most of the new machines required a power source. Businesses, therefore, moved from the home into large buildings, usually near a swiftly running stream that supplied the necessary power.

While taking advantage of the industrial methods and inventions of England, the United States was busy creating its own laborsaving devices. Agriculture, America's earliest and largest industry, was first to reap the benefits of the machine age. This change is sometimes called the Agricultural Revolution.

Advantages of War

while England and France were engaged in war, President Thomas Jefferson convinced Congress that all United States trade with foreign countries should be stopped. The President thought this move was necessary because both England and France were interfering with United States ships that traded with the other country. Congress agreed and acted. This act of Congress, the Embargo Act, meant that the United States could no longer buy goods manufactured in England. This act greatly increased the growth of factories in the United States. Items that were manufactured in England now had to be produced in the United States. Increased production introduced strong competition among American businesses, which in turn provided the incentive to search for better ways of production.
