Joint Classifications

Amphiarthroses

Slightly movable joints between two bones-

Gomphoses

immovable joint in which a conical process fits into a socket

Enarthrosis

A ball-and -socket joint in which the spherical head fits into a cuplike cavity and provides free movement. eg. hip and shoulder joints

Ginglymus

A hinge joint that only allows movement in only one plane eg. elbow and knee joints

Ellipsoid

A modified ball and socket joint inwhich the opposing surfaces are shaped like a spindle or are ellipsoidal instead of being spherical. eg. wrist joint

Trochoid

A pivot joint that resembles a pulley and allows movement in a partial ring. eg. radiounlar joints

Arthrodia

Agliding joint where bones slide face to face and movement is limited by restraining ligaments.eg.intercarpal and intertarsal joints

Articular Cartilage

Connective tissue covering the ends of long bones

Saddle Joint

Freely Movable joint where both bones have a convex and concave shape eg. carpometacarpal joint

Gliding Joint

Freely movable joint that allows bones to make sliding motion

Hinge Joint

Freely movable joint that has one convex surface and one concave surface

Pivot Joint

Freely movable joint where a bones moves around a central axis

Ball and Socket Joint

Freely movable joints in which a rounded end of one bone fits into an indented end of another

Condyloid Joint

Freely moveable joint that allows bones to move about one another in many directions, BUT NOT rotation

Synarthroses

Immovable joint that lacks synovial cavity and held together by fibrous connective tissue. eg. sutures of the cranium and the sternocostal joints

Sutures

Joint where thin layer of dense fibrous connective tissue unites bones of the skull

Synovial fluid

Lubricating substance found in joint cavities

Syndesmoses

The fibrocartilage forms an interosseous ligament between the bones. eg. the inferior tibiofibular articulation an the bones of the infant skull. Slightly movable joints where bones are connected by ligaments.

Symphysis

The opposed surfaces of the bone are connected through fibrocartilage. eg. include the symphysis pubis and the intervertebral discs.

Diarthroses

aka synovial joints; freely movable joints that is lubricated by synovial fluid within the joint space
