Joe Burrow Heisman Speech

-The speech led to fundraiser and donations and allowed the Athens County Food Pantry to feed more hungry people and expand operations Athens is the poorest county in Ohio -His speech resonated with the audience: Will Drabold, an Athens native and Ohio university alum started an online fundraiser and two days after Burrow's speech everything went off the walls and crazy -Joe Burrow's speech reached millions of people through its broadcasting and media coverage. -His words resonated with people who had the ability to donate and give money to the Ohio food pantry -Someone in sports who is very successful and widely admired can use his platform for others -Because 650,000 was made you can see that sports can also be a business due to connections and using your platform for specific reasons

Do you think sponsorship money will be split 50/50 with men and women?

-Think it's going to take quite some time. ex. NFL there is no woman counterpart -Going to happen sooner than we think though -Happening at college level- facilities are better at being 50/50 and making women's facilities much better -There is a whole industry out there for women- get women on all sides of the game

-Wasserman started off as sports talent- Casie Wasserman is grandson of Woo Wasserman who was important in shaping what Hollywood is today -Year ago acquired music booking talent agency -As things are radically changing, representing athletes and artists, not just abt representing them as athletes it's understanding them in a 360 view and understanding life after their career -Consumers and fans want more and more -Brillstein deal had been talked about for a long time- accelerated with Britney Griner work and thought that when Brittney came back they knew they would have to honor her story -Lead to call with Brillstein to talk about BG's documentary and media rights -Through existing relationship, worked with them closely, the long going talk got pushed passed finish line -Super excited about being in entertainment space and working together through a lot of different areas -Entertainment and auto industry have advanced so quickly the labor industry couldn't keep up -The way viewers get entertainment, packages- accelerated so quickly so they have to sort it out -Automobile industry: building with AI and plastic instead of people and steal- how you keep up with media industry that is evolving so fast -Believe they won't be able to serve their clients if they don't utilize entertainment space of industry

ESPN survival while cable dies

-When consumers pay their cable or satellite TV bills, networks get a cut and the biggest portion is passed along to ESPN -Consumers moving to streaming video has led to the decline of the pay-TV business which has lost 25 million customers in the last 5 years alone -Disney pulled ESPN and its other channels off of Charter Communications' cable system Thursday which left millions of views without U.S. Open coverage and many college football games -Sports are the most valuable programming on TV because viewers watch them live and sit through commercials - -SPORTS BUSINESS INTEGRATION -The Network's digital business continues to grow and its presence on social media is strong. ESPN is most popular sports brand on tik tok -Business and sports integration: the company is going to be aggressive to try and keep its NBA deal which is up in 2025, strong relationship with NBA and last seasons finals Iger was sitting courtside with commissioner adam silver who might be a future disney chief executive -ESPN is trying to pour less of their money into cable subscriptions as ESPN is getting 1.5 billion over the next decade to license its famous brand name to Penn Entertainment for an online gambling app ESPN Bet.

media attention and athletes:

-With how social media has grown in the last 20 years it has made it easy for athletes to talk directly to fans -Balance -Lets individuals tell their stories -Has to be a level of athletic performance be at the highest level -Women's national team- has had tremendous success, how do we build that back up and how do we make a shift -Using all those different platforms to tell your story, expose the brand and also do well and get people to like you -Invest in the youth game, go both top down and bottom up -Youth women's flag football teams, Provide opportunity for youth -Tell stories to companies with money and resources: a lot of problems for women is resources: they don't have access to sports bras, conversation about periods, etc. -Nike donated 22,000 sports bras at BMO stadium for young girls

Angel's FC: Privilege with ownership group, is this an equal playing field for other teams?

-Working with the league that the league standard is higher and demanding more from sponsorship and media rights -By helping the league change, helping all the teams in the league Monthly meetings where they are all sharing ideas and collaborating to make the league better

Passion and Sports Reading

-You can't calculate passion but all the growth in revenue and spending- the seats, sponsors, spectators, and service companies that pile atop each other give you 194.64 billion -Passion sells tickets (12 billion in ticket sales last year) and drives viewership(7 bill in rights and fees spent last year). It also plays into sponsorship

Naming Rights:

-name attached to stadium or arena and company pays a fee -Business deal in which a company pays a yearly fee- typically ranging from $5 million to $20 million- to attach its name to a stadium or arena -Ex. Crypto.com arena (LA), Oracle Arena, Coors Field, Chase Center, Petco Park (SD), U.S. Bank Stadium (Minneapolis)

Rose bowl Parade

-what Rose Bowl does for outreach to the community

Build your network, USC network is by far the greatest thing about this school. -Network is incredible, everyone is willing to help 4. Keep healthy boundaries: know how to balance work and personal life. 5. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessing every day Character: Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Character is what you really are. Reputation is what people say you are.

Key Sports Business Terms

1. Revenue Streams 2. Naming Rights 3. Title Sponsorship: 4. Presenting Sponsorship Key differences to remember: -Naming Rights is about stadiums/arenas -Title/Presenting Sponsorships are about events

Agent business is extremely competitive Take advantage of internship opportunities Go above and beyond

What's in a Franchise Name? Sports Business Integration- Angels

Angels are a great example of trying to figure out who you are - Didn't think Anaheim was big enough even though disneyland was there, didn't want to be "Anaheim Angels," went to CA Angels, then Anaheim Angels and got a deal from the city to help build stadium and called themselves Anaheim - Wanted to change to LA Angels: Business decision- attract national advertisers, TV deals, done completely for business reasons

Regional/State franchise names (trending):

Arizona diamondbacks (think that because phoenix tuscan rivalry they should call it arizona to stray from the rivalry) Colorado avalanche Indiana pacers New england patriots- wanted to draw fans from connecticut and other places in NE Golden state warriors Texas rangers

Advertising on the outfield of Baseball games

At first they thought it cluttered the stadiums but now there are advertisements "United Airlines field" at USC memorial coliseum, United pays a lot of money to have their name advertised Stanford and Notre Dame don't need the money so they don't have advertisements up in their stadiums

Principle #2 Sports Broadcasting

Being First vs. Being Accurate- we live in a time where there's a race to be first and get credit. Race to be right is more important. Set up Sacramento Kings NBA TV story Similar Philosophies on Right vs. First Want to be right, not a breaking news organization, someone else can break the news

USC Hires Jennifer Cohen- Business

Business decision: As USC moves to Big 10, they need to make changes to navigate. Cohen raised $50 million for UW stadium renovation and negotiated their apparel contract with Adidas- good ties to business and a successful woman

Nike to get swoosh on TV:

Hands get taped and swoosh got covered on gloves so they moved the swoosh to the pinky

Nathan-Is it better to offer multiple services to your clients or just concentrate on negotiating player contracts? Should you deal with athletes in different sports or focus on one sport?

He only deals with the NBA but he tries to offer his clients everything for ex. He can help them with legal stuff because he went to law school and he tries to help them in multiple facets

AI impact

Impact of AI on jobs- his past jobs of logging highlights may go away BUSINESS AI INTEGRATION

Nathan-How do you set yourself apart from others?

Is law school a requirement? - Anytime you can add a degree or a separator do it - Legal background can be an advantage - Trade of his to always be working and doing something

Week 3 Weekly Woodens

John Wooden's Definition of Success: "Success is peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets credit

Pac-12 Collapse

Keeping Bruins- With travel and media rights deals the bruins were going to make $52 million per year in Big 10 so if Kliavkoff could guarantee the Bruins $52 million annually the regents promised Kliavkoff a vote heavily in favor of UCLA staying in the Pac 12 OTHER SCHOOLS WERE NOT GOING TO LIKE UCLA GETTING MORE MONEY, Oregon said no - Business and connections: Kliavkoff tried to maintain good relationships with remaining Pac-12 schools by visiting them and trying to keep morale high -From a business standpoint it would have been best for the remaining schools in the Big 12 to join Pac-12 but USC and UCLA reps shut it down because the league would then not be as selective -Package deals were dead for Pac 12 as NBC and Amazon negotiations broke down -Pac12 only had a deal with Apple. Kliavkoff had to convince presidents to take 23 million dollar deal when they wanted 50 -The deal did not guarantee teams any games on linear TV networks

City Franchise Names (Traditional):

LA dodgers NY Knicks Phoenix Suns Denver Broncos Indianapolis COlts Miami marlins (was Florida, same thing where they made a deal for new stadium and had to call themselves miami)

MLB sports business integration

MLB changed their rules to make the game shorter, cut down almost 30 minutes so more people come to the game

Why do some professional sports franchises use a traditional city name, such as Denver Broncos, while others choose a regional or state-wide name, such as Colorado Rockies, Golden State Warriors or New England Patriots? Why would the Anaheim Angels have changed their name to the bizarre-sounding Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?

Make the team more relevant to a greater population, LA has a much bigger population and can reach more people Thought the city of Anaheim wasn't big time enough, they then went to a regional name, California before LA

Golden State Warriors vs. San Francisco Warriors

Moved to Oakland and the owner didn't think Oakland was big enough to call them the Oakland warriors Wanted to come up with a new name, Pete (owners friend) came up with Golden State (golden state freeway), people love this name and it clicked

NFL Partnerships, at a glance

New Business team: - Go out there and find new partners and deals Strategy team: - sits between new business and sponsorship and partnership team - Helps to lead the strategy on how to approach the deal - Depends on category how many partners they have ex. Sports betting; multiple, pizza; 1 -Don't put their eggs in 1 basket -Over $1B in revenue across NFL -Partnerships Group Consumer products, media sales, and sponsorship

Week 2 Weekly Woodens

No ONE is an overachiever. How can you rise above your level of competency? We're all underachievers to different degrees. You may hear someone say that a certain individual "gave 110%" How can that be? You can only give what you have, you only have 100%. From Professor Fellenzer: Never let anyone call you an overachiever. If anyone calls you an overachiever, tell them "there's no such thing as an overachiever. If you achieve something, then you are obviously capable of achieving it! Apparently YOUR expectations for me weren't high enough. That's on you not me." The Opinions of Others: Do not become too concerned about what others may think of you. Be very concerned about what you think of yourself. Too often, we can care more about a stranger's opinion of us than our own. Your opinion of yourself begins on the inside with your character. What do you believe in, are you willing to stand up for it despite what others may think or say?

Primary Reasons to name your team regionally or city

Primary reasons: Grow fanbase: expand thinking if you have state or regional name branding/marketing strategies: colorado rockies: people in wyoming and kansas feel more connected (neighboring states) Broader appeal Regional pride ex. Arizona rivalry

Ex. Sports Illustrated Jabari Parker cover with Nike on Jabaris shorts, socks, coaches shoes, the ball.

Showcase the front of the ball with the swoosh and Nike pays to have the rights to represent Duke and a benefit you're hoping for to get included for for exposure purposes

Week 4 Weekly Woodens

Some suggestions for succeeding: 1. Be quick but don't hurry 2.Fear no opponent. 3.Respect every opponent 4.Understand that the harder you work, the more luck you will have 5.Failing to prepare is preparing to fail Two other observations -Do not mistake activity for achievement. -There is nothing stronger than gentleness.

Jeff Felenzer- Keys to Success in Sports Business

The 4 Ps: Passion, Preparation... Performance... Persistence (go in this order) 1. Make yourself invaluable 2. Build real relationships with people... not for what they can do for you, but what you can learn from them 3. 90% of success is just showing up 4. Be prepared to wear a lot of hats (perform multiple tasks) 5. Don't be afraid to admit that you don't have all the answers- it's not a sign of weakness 6. Be a good listener... you'll learn more and earn more that way 7. Be patient, don't get discouraged; allow plenty of time to nurture your ideas and help it grow 8. Surround yourself with solid, capable, experienced people-it's the key to building a winning team. Don't micromanage... show faith in the people you hire, then let them do their thing! 9. Work hard, stay focused on the details and ask yourself this question often: Am I doing as much as I can to reach my goals? 10. Take time to have fun along the way; what you'll remember most, and what is most rewarding, is the journey

Game Rule: Sports events account for all but 6 of the top 100 telecasts of 2022

The NFL and college football continued to draw the most viewers of any form of programming as viewers watched sports in record numbers. Overall, sports accounted for 94 of the 100 most-watched telecasts for the year.

Halftime show

The halftime show is a huge business plan for the NFL - The #1 kept secret is the performer for the halftime show - Jay Z and Roc Nation picks halftime performer - Want to pick artists who are authentic to the audience and where the superbowl is being held - Making it feel unique, different, and authentic to who the artist is -Theatrics build up every year which causes more people to want to watch and pay attention, draws viewership to the game

Tips for Students

Tips for Students: 1. Network -intern/volunteer 2. Social media dangers -Put the phone/camera away -Know culture of company your work with -If you're doing it to show off, don't -What you post on social media will never go away 3. Lose any attitude 4. Always proof your work -Seems simple but the amount of cover letters and resumes they see with errors- its a problem -Do your baseline homework -Proofread -If you met someone 2 months prior, if they got promoted it would be great to mention that -Look up hiring managers or HR for companies to get an extra connection if you don't have one, use anyone in your network to distinguish yourself and ask them questions about the position -Send thank you emails acknowledging that someone talked to you -As you think about what you want to do, set up informational interviews to talk about things -Ask questions

NCAA legal battles that impacted NIL

Waldrep vs. TCU (injured in 1974, case settled in 2000) TCU running back paralyzed in game against Alabama. -TCU stopped paying medical bills after nine months. -Waldrep sued to receive workman's compensation, arguing he was an employee. In 2000, the Texas appeals court rejected Waldrep's claim, ruling that he was a "student athlete," not an employee. -Bloom vs. NCAA (2004) NCAA allows athletes to be a paid professional in one sport and retain amateur status in another. However, NCAA draws the line with mogul champion and Colorado football player Jeremy Bloom receiving paid endorsements to support skiing career. -O'Bannon vs. NCAA (2014) Former college basketball star sues the NCAA over its licensing his NIL to EA Sports for commercial purposes -NCAA vs. Alston: which upheld an injunction from the 9th Circuit in Oakland that stated schools could no longer limit compensation related to education and asserted that NCAA amateurism does not deserve antitrust protections LED DIRECTLY TO NIL -Court Justice Kavanughs strict idea about NCAA: -Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate. And under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different. The NCAA is not above the law

Why college teams pay to play bad teams

Why Did Oregon Schedule Portland State: Cut a check to a smaller, worse school and the better team beats the team badly and gets practice and gets out first game jitters. Called BYE games, give them a check and you beat them -Got $571,000 to play at Oregon -Business transaction disguised as a game: INTERSECTION OF SPORTS AND BUSINESS EXAMPLE: move to get a lot of money to build your program, not fair to players to get beat badly but can get the players more exposure playing better teams - Oregon used the game to get ready for next week's game and to break a sweat. They wanted to boost morale and win in front of 45,723 people -Vikings were in it for the money -Last season, Portland State made $500,000 to play at Washington. It collected another $435,000 to travel to San Jose State. Next week, PSU will make $400,000 to play at Wyoming. And in 2024, the Vikings have signed contracts to travel to Washington State ($563,000) and San Diego State ($475,000) for games. - Business model

Good example of sports and business integration- stadiums:

everyone wants to play in the shiny new Sofi stadium and adds competition to stadiums like the rose bowl and coliseum, Beyonce and Taylor Swift concerts- everyone wants to go, tickets are expensive and hard to come by
