Types of waste and waste containers

o Glass Waste consists of broken glassware, chipped or cracked glassware, glass pipettes and vials. Glass Waste Containers are white, cardboard boxes, approximately 3 feet tall. Do not handle broken glass with your hand. Use a dustpan and brush, located at the waste container. o Organic Liquid Chemical Waste consists of organic compounds that are pure liquid or solutions of solid compounds dissolved a solvent. The Organic Liquid Chemical Waste Containers are located in the Chemical Hood in your area. They are glass bottles with a special capped funnel. Close the cap after every use, per EPA rules! Each waste container bears a hazardous waste label that lists all chemicals in the container. EVERY PERSON using the waste container must neutralize their own waste before adding it to a container or we could have a reaction in the waste bottle causing pressure to build and the waste contents to geyser out of the bottle. o Solid Chemical Waste consists of all solid chemicals. The Solid Chemical Waste Containers are located next to the balances in your area. They are square, plastic containers with a top. Close the top after every use, per EPA rules! Each waste container bears a hazardous waste label that lists all chemicals in the container. o Sharps Waste consists of all syringes and needles, used occasionally to transfer small amounts of liquid materials. Sharps Waste Containers are red, plastic boxes with a safety top. Staff will place them on benchtops in your area when needed. o Trash Waste consists of paper, gloves, weigh boats, spill pads, vial caps, etc. Trash barrels are located next to sinks.
