Limbic System
What is the limbic system referred to as?
"The emotional brain" because these structures regulate emotions.
hippocampus
Controls how memories are stored. Converts short term memory into long term memory.
Limbic System
Controls our emotions.
What happens when the amygdala is destroyed?
It creates a mellowing effect.
Hippocampus
It forms new memories and turns them into long term memories (LTM). Damage to this area can cause you to not be able to form new memories.
Where is the hypothalamus located?
It is located below the thalamus.
Where is the limbic system located?
It is located in the center section of the brain; between the two temporal lobes.
The shape of the hippocampus.
It is shaped like a seahorse.
amygdala
It is the aggression center.
thalamus
It is the sensory relay system (except for smell), sends signals from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain, keeps the body moving smoothly, acts like a tiny switchboard to direct brain traffic
Hypothalamus
It is the size of a kidney bean and it regulates autonomic nervous system (ANS). Also controls adrenaline.
How big is the hypothalamus?
It is very small (about the size of a kidney bean).
Autonomic Nervous System
Produces hormones that regulate these responses: Fight/Flight, Rest/Digest.
hypothalamus
Regulates response with the Automatic Nervous System, regulates fight/flight and the rest/digest response, acts as the body's internal clock and its thermostat
Thalamus
Sensory relay station, touch, hear, see, and taste (Emotion). Directs these senses to the top of the brain. Smell bypasses the Thalamus.
How many thalami are there?
There are two of them.
What are the four parts in the limbic system?
They are the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, the amygdala and the thalamus.
What does the amygdala do?
When it is stimulated it can produce anger/violence or fear/anxiety.
Kluver-Bucy
You have damaged or no Amygdalas. The symptoms are hyperorality, hypersexuality, and disinhibited behavior.
Amygdala
Agression center, if activated can cause anger, fear, anxiety, and violence. If gone you are never afraid of anything and have a mellow affect. This is called the Kluver-Bucy disease.
How many of each part of the limbic system is there?
2 hippocampi, 2 amgdalae, 2 thalami, and 2 hypothalami
