Verbal irony

A character says one thing, but means something else

Antagonist

A character who opposes the main character

Simile

A comparison between two unlike things using comparison words such as like,as, or than

Metaphor

A comparison between two unlike things without the use of comparison words

Foreshadowing

A hint or clue as to what will happen later in a story

Allusion

A reference to someone or something that is known from history, religion, politics, sports, science, etc.

Hyperbole

An incredible exaggeration or overstatement

Climax

Most exciting part of the story; turning point

onomantopoeia

Naming a thing or action by imitating the sound associated with it

Resolution

Problem of the story is "solved" here

Suspense

The anxiety a reader feels wondering what will happen next in a literary work

Tone

The attitude a writer takes toward a subject (ex.sarcastic)

Protagonist

The main character of the story

Theme

The main idea of a literary work-message about life

Flashback

The narrator stops the action of the story and continues it from previous time

Mood

The overall emotion created by a work of literature (ex.scary)

Alliteration

The repetition of the same beginning consonant sound

Point of view

The vantage point from which the writer has chosen to tell the story

Imagery

The writer's use of figurative language to appeal to the senses
