• Crankweb deflection readings need only be taken after each major overhaul, unless damage is suspected as a result of grounding or collision. • Crankweb deflections should also be taken after dry dock or haul out of the cutter • Crankweb deflection readings should only be taken with the cutter waterborne • Crankshaft deflection readings are to be recorded in the machinery history and reported in the Cutter Engineering Report for engines with crank journals of 4 inches or more. • Method for checking crankshaft alignment is using the crankshaft deflection gage. o Specially adapted dial indicator which fits between the crankwebs and directly reads the flexing motion of the webs as the crankshaft is slowly turned. • Center punch marks shall be small and made with a very sharp punch. A needle valve from a scrapped fuel injector is a good tool. • Crankweb deflection readings are from 5 places. • The most important reading is at position 3 because it indicates the following • Bearing wear • Condition of foundation • Position of outboard bearing • The magnitude of deflection is usually expressed in quarter thousandths. DEMP Performance Monitoring Indicators/Trending Cylinder Compression and Firing Pressures If both firing and compression pressures drop noticeably at about the same point, this is an indication that the: o rings are sticking, broken, or beginning to wear o valves are not functioning properly o liner is beginning to score o or a piston has cracked Exhaust Temperatures o A drop in exhaust temp and firing pressure only indicates a problem in the fuel system o If the drop is isolated to a small number of cylinders the problem may be the injectors o If the drop is in all cylinders the problem is more likely the low-pressure pump or distribution system o Carboning of exhaust ports or valves may cause a rise in temp o A faulty injector occasionally causes a high exhaust temp o High exhaust temps indicate that the fuel control is sticking or the overall condition of the engine has deteriorated so excess fuel is being fed to bring up to speed Crankcase Vacuum Internal wear, defective pistons, and excessive carboning of rings will be indicated by a gradual loss of crankcase vacuum. a) As wear occurs between ring, piston and liner vacuum will decrease. b) As blow-by increases increases, the high pressure combustion gasses break down the protective oil film on the cylinder walls. c) As further wear occurs, additional corrosive gasses blow by, accelerating the wear d) With increasing blow by the engine sump temperature will begin to rise, driving off the relatively light lubricating oil and fuel factions. e) As the oil becomes hotter, more vapors will form f) Eventually hot combustion gasses entering the crankcase can cause a crankcase explosion. If crankcase vacuum decreases with no change in other indicators, the crankcase scavenging system should be checked for proper operation. Intake Manifold Pressure In an engine that uses a positive displacement blower, the intake manifold pressure will only indicate a general composite of the internal engine sealing and the condition sealing within the blower In an engine that uses a turbocharger, a drop in air box pressure can be attributed to improper sealing of the intake valves or the pistons, rings, or cylinders. A change in intake pressure and to exhaust back pressure may be due to carboning of the turbo. Exhaust Back Pressure When the exhaust manifold or engine's exhaust system is fouled or when there is leakage of combustion gasses past the exhaust valves, the pressure in the exhaust manifold will begin to rise. Any increase will reduce engine combustion efficiency Carbon build up in two-stroke cycle exhaust ports will decrease exhaust backpressure Carboning of turbo may increase back pressure Lube Oil Consumption Lube oil consumption initially will be high due to unseated piston rings, as rings become seated the consumption will decrease Secondary Indicators Pressure differential across strainers and filters Shift strainers at least once a day Jacket water temps Rise across engine should not exceed 10 to 12 degrees Lube oil temperature Oxidation rate doubles with each 18degree rise in temperature Oxidation is the chemical process promoting the formation of crankcase sludge known as "mayonnaise" also gumming and lacquers Uniformity of fuel delivery to each cylinder Normal fuel pump rack position should be within 1 or 3 mm of one another Any greater spread indicates deficiencies in the pump, the nozzle, or both Appearance of exhaust White smoke after getting underway - not warmed up yet Heavy, dense smoke - overloading Dirty, amber smoke - fuel system problems White smoke - cooling system Blue hazy smoke - lube oil in combustion spaces Lube Oil Testing Program MLC's shall administer the program Funding for participation in the NOAP program shall be handled by Commandant G-SEN All cutters 65 ft and longer are required to participate Sampling point shall be placed ahead of the filter connection Valve shall have ¼ -inch opening and be able to withstand a pressure of at least 100psi and a temp of 275° Valve shall be capped and the cap chained to the valve Precautions After an oil change allow a minimum of 25 hours before sampling If the time to take a sample and adding oil coincide, take the sample before adding oil Oil Sample Intervals For diesel engines with oil changes at 750 hrs or greater, a minimum of three samples must be taken; intervals shall not exceed 250 hrs. With oil change intervals less than 750 hrs, samples shall be taken at oil change intervals. R/G's, thrusters, cpp's, and hyd systems that don't have oil change intervals shall be done quarterly. Equipment with oil change intervals shall be sampled a minimum of three times between oil changes. Samples of new oil being installed shall be taken Newly overhauled engines shall have samples taken at 1, 25, 50 hours and then at regular intervals. Oil Analysis Tests and Analysis Spectrometric Analysis for wear metals o Reported in parts per million (ppm) o Results shall be trended o Iron, silicon, lead, magnesium, copper, chromium, aluminum, molybdenum, nickel, silver, tin, zinc Physical properties test o Viscosity @ 40 C and 100 C o Viscosity index o Fuel dilution o Glycol contamination (engines) o water o Suspended solids/non-suspended solids o PH / flash point o Percent oxidation (engines, r/g's, thruster l/o, turbines) o Particle count (Hydraulics) Particle Count Analysis (CPP and hydraulic systems only) o Greater than 2, 5, 15, 25, 50, 100 microns Lab requested re-samples will have a red cap. Each unit participating in the program will maintain an "Oil History Log" Viscosity Testing Fuel dilution decreases viscosity Water contamination increases viscosity Viscosity limits are 40 % increase and 5 % dilution from new oil Cutters with oil-filled propeller shaft stern tubes or ccp system shall visually test every week for water Detroit Diesel engines o 1 % dilution for 149 engine o 2.5 % for 53, 71, 92 series Engines with fuel systems designed in such a way that failures to oil seals will result in fuel contamination of the lube oil shall have an oil viscosity check every four operating hours Two-Stroke Cycle Gasoline Engines BIA-TC-W oil shall be used Fuel to oil ratio of 50-1;one pint per 6 gallons of gas FLEXIBLE HOSES Hose Classification Standard Hoses (replacement 8 years) Non-Standard Hoses (replacement 5 years) o Hoses installed in the weather o Hoses that are required to be replaced on a more frequent basis o Engine exhaust hoses Condition Bases Maintenance (replacement on condition) o Test and instrumentation hoses o Metal, Teflon, and thermoplastic hoses in high pressure systems Inspected on a schedule not to exceed 8 years and can be reused Pneumatic hoses for tools Drain systems, plumbing/gravity drains Vacuum flush waste system Halon and co2 fixed extinguisher hoses Hose Logs Shall include all standard and nonstandard hoses and the following: Metal, Teflon, and thermoplastic hoses Test and instrument hoses Halon and co2 fixed system hoses Expansion joints will be in the electronic hose log Hoses not included in the log: Outboard engine fuel hoses Fire hoses and water main hoses General usage CBM hoses (pneumatic hoses, vacuum flush, drainage Hose shelf life Not exceed 10 years Storage shall be in a cool dry are not exceeding 100° Hydrostatic Testing Hoses shall be tested before installation Test pressure of twice the rated working pressure of the hose Test pressure shall be held for 5 minutes CBM hoses operating in low pressure (less than 150psi) do not have to be tested Instrumentation hoses that are factory assembled do not have to be tested Rudder Inspection 2 basic types of rudder bearings 1) stave bearing 2) smooth bushing Squeaking noise - lack of lubrication or insufficient load Metallic tone - insufficient internal bearing clearance caused by excessive shaft or housing interferences, or axial preloading caused by improper adjustment or inadequate lubrication Smooth clear tone - marks in the stationary raceway caused by brinelling. When the sound intensity varies with each revolution, the rotating ring has been brinelled Intermittent noise - usually unique to ball bearings and indicates a damaged ball Crunching noise - presence of dirt Store bearings in a heated area (condensation can form on cold surfaces) but avoid over 120° because the preservative will oxidize faster A/C & R Most common refrigerants used in the Coast Guard are R-12, R-22, and R-134a R-12 cylinder is white R-22 cylinder is light green R-134a cylinder is light blue Most common secondary refrigerants are water, brine, and antifreeze. Refillable cylinders are grey with the upper part colored yellow Refillable non-shattering are orange with the refrigerant stenciled Do not use disposable cylinders on board cutters. Refrigerant must be transferred to refillable non-shattering cylinders. Electronic Halogen leak detector most common Halide torch - a bluish green flame indicates a leak; increasing amounts of refrigerant will change the flame from bright green to a violet tinge with red Thermostatic expansion valves are used to maintain a constant superheat between 4° and 12°F. 10°F is ideal. The four stages in basic refrigeration Compression • Takes place in the COMPRESSOR. • The refrigerant vapor temperature is raised above the cooling medium temperature by the compressor. Condensation • Takes place in the CONDENSER. • Superheat is removed from the refrigerant vapor. • The refrigerant condenses, giving up its latent heat of condensation to the cooling medium. • The liquid refrigerant is sub cooled. Expansion • Takes place at the METERING DEVICE that allows high-pressure, high-temperature liquid refrigerant to pass through an orifice and then rapidly expand in volume. This expansion results in lower refrigerant pressure. • Creates a pressure drop to lower the boiling point of the refrigerant. • The refrigerant enters the evaporator as a saturated vapor (mostly liquid). • Refrigerant begins to boil (flash) due to the heat contained within it. As the refrigerant turns into a vapor, it occupies 25 times the volume it would as a liquid. • As pressure drops, the refrigerant temperature drops due to the pressure temperature relationship. Evaporation • Takes place in the EVAPORATOR. • The refrigerant will absorb latent heat of vaporization from the products/space and will flash off into a vapor. • Totally vaporized refrigerant will become superheated. OWS Oil water separators operate on the principle of coalescing. Coalescing is the natural ability of two dissimilar liquids to separate There are two basic types of OWS 1. Pressurized type 2, Gravity/vacuum type 15ppm or less will be pumped overboard Greater than 15ppm will be reciculated 12 NM or less is 15ppm 100NM can be no more than 100ppm Potable Water Temperature of hot water shall not exceed 130° for personal use of the crew. Bromine levels exceeding 2.7mg/l should not be ingested. Water from an RO should be less than 500 ppm TDS or less than 1000micromhos/cm conductivity Evaporator feedwater shall be chemically treated to reduce the build-up of scale HAGEVAP PD-8 and AMEROYAL are the two authorized feedwater treatment chemicals.
