definitional knowledge
A dictionary-related activity in which prediction of word meaning comes from reading the word in different contexts. The dictionary is used for verification of predictions.
Concept
A mental image of anything; can be used as the basis for grouping by common features or similar criteria.
concept circles
A vocabulary activity in which students identify conceptual relationships among words and phrases that are partitioned within a circle.
instrumental hypothesis
Belief in a causal chain be-tween vocabulary knowledge and comprehension; that is, if comprehension depends in part on the knowledge of word meanings, vocabulary instruction should influence comprehension
