transparent GIF

- A GIF image in which one color is turned off, for example the background color, allowing the webpage background color to show through

interlaced GIF

- A GIF image that displays on the screen in a sequence of passes; each pass displays the whole image at a higher resolution than the previous pass, gradually changing from blurry to distinct.

progressive JPEG

- A JPEG image that appears on the screen in a sequence of passes with progressively improved image quality, allowing the viewer a preview of the image.

resolution dependent

- A bitmap image that contains a specific number of pixels measured as pixels per inch (ppi) and cannot be resized in image editing software without losing some image quality.

- A commonly available font that most browsers can display

PostScript

- A font standard developed by Adobe Systems for PostScript printers

OpenType

- A font standard that incorporates TrueType and PostScript fonts for Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

- A font that must first download in order to allow the webpage text to appear

Portable Network Graphics (PNG)

- A free, open source image format developed as a free open source format to replace the GIF format.

typeface

- A group of alphabetic characters, numbers, and symbols with the same design, such as the slant and thickness.

font family

- A group of fonts that identifies the preferred font as well as backup fonts.

hero image

- A large, banner-type image used primarily as the center image on a website's home page. See also background image

- A list of fonts in a CSS font-family declaration that are listed in order of preference by the web designer.

- A million pixels

bounding box

- A nonprinting box in which you can enter webpage tex

file extension

- A period (.) and a file format identifier that is added to a file's name

em unit

- A relative font size measurement where one em unit equals the base font size

rem

- A root em; a specification for flexible font sizing.

serif

- A short line extending from the top or bottom of a character; a type of font that includes serifs.

antialiasing

- A technique for smoothing jagged edges by adding shaded pixels that make the image appear to have smooth lines and curves

photo sharing website

- A website through which users can order printed copies, create photo albums, and share links to the photos with friends and family. Photo sharing websites enable you to store, share, and organize digital photos.

JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF

- An image compression format standard, commonly referred to as JPEG, used for digital photographs, photo-like paintings, watercolors, and complex illustrations requiring more than 256 colors.

lossy compression

- An image compression method that loses image data permanently each time the image is saved

lossless compression

- An image compression method that retains all the data in the image when the image is saved.

web-ready image

- An image for the web that has been edited and optimized to find the best balance between file size and image quality.

Web Open Font Format (WOFF

- Font format similar to OpenType or TrueType but includes compression. The W3C recommends using WOFF file format.

absolute font size

- Font sizes that might not change when visitors change their browser font size settings

bitmap

- Images that are created pixel by pixel. See also raster images

vector image

- Images that consist of a group of separate drawing objects, such as shapes, curves, and lines, combined to create a single image. See also vector graphics

content text

- Paragraphs, image captions, and more

screen capture software

- Software that is used to create an image of screen contents.

heading

- Text meant to define, set apart, or set a mood

leading

- The amount of vertical space or line spacing between lines of text; more line spacing generally means greater readability

font

- The digital file that specifies the combination of character data used to display the typeface.

type size

An input device that reads printed text, images, or objects and then translates the results into a file that a computer can use, such as an image file.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)

An international committee sponsored by the ISO standards organization that published the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) image compression format standard.

relative font size

Font sizes that adjust to the user's screen and resolution.

sans serif

Fonts that do not have serifs.

kerning

The addition or removal of space between two individual characters

raster image

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)

The original graphics format used on the web; contains a compression algorithm that reduces file size; GIF images are 8-bit color images and are saved with a maximum of 256 colors.

The variations in type form such as roman (regular), italic, or bold.
