15:User Answer Correct The Killers - Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), Ronnie Vannucci (drums)Few bands in the early 2000s rose so quickly to the forefront of pop music as the Killers. With a mix of '80s-styled synth pop and fashionista charm, the band's street-smart debut, Hot Fuss, became one of 2004's biggest releases, spawning four singles, "Somebody Told Me," "Mr. Brightside," "Smile Like You Mean It," and "All These Things That I've Done," and catapulting the group into the international spotlight. Hot Fuss earned the Killers five Grammy nominations and sold over five million copies. Their second album Sam's Town, deemphasized the group's new wave sensibilities in favor of something more akin to the heartland rock of Bruce Springsteen and Rattle and Hum-era U2. The highly anticipated release of Sam's Town in early October 2006 brought sales of over 700,000 copies worldwide during its first week, and spawned three U.S. singles "When You were Young," "Bones" and "For Reasons Unknown" gaining the Killers two more Grammy nominations. Sawdust, a collection of B-sides, rarities, and remixes, followed one year later, serving as a stopgap recording between the band's proper studio albums. The Killers then returned in 2008 with Day & Age, which eschewed the Americana tangents of Sam's Town in favor of pop pastiches and sleek, oddball dance-rock. The band's return to the dance floor style and the Top 40 single "Human" helped the Killers continue their commercial streak. A lengthy tour carried the band into 2009, which also saw the release of the concert album Live from the Royal Albert Hall. Solo work comprised many of the next few years, including Brandon Flowers' Flamingo, Ronnie Vannucci's Big Talk, and Mark Stoermer's Another Life. After reconvening in early 2011, the band got to work on its fourth studio album, enlisting a small army of notable producers, including Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite, Damian Taylor, Stuart Price, and Brendan O'Brien. The resulting Battle Born was released in September, 2012. In early 2013, the band announced that they would be releasing their first greatest-hits collection later that year. Entitled Direct Hits, the November release featured two newly recorded songs, "Shot at Night" and "Just Another Girl," which were produced by M83 and Stuart Price, respectively. - Source: Andrew Leahey, The All Music Guide. The Killer's song "When You Were Young" begins with an open guitar chord and four bars of driving rock 'n' roll before the famous two-part hook (theme) enters. The two-part hook is made up of a short catchy guitar, or keyboard lick that is answered immediately with an almost identical lick making up the "two-part hook." How many times is this two-part hook played in "When You Were Young" (slight variations of the "hook" should be counted)?

This album was released in 1975, and included two breakaway hits. These two tracks were entitles "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out". In this album, a clear influence from artists such as Bob Dylan, and Chuck Berry can be heard. "Born to Run" has been ranked at #21 in Rolling Stone magazine's top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. During this time, Springsteen finalized his backup group and called them The E Street Band. With this new settled group, Springsteen found more stability to his writing. This allowed him to explore new sounds, and textures that would remain consistent throughout his performances. Springsteen became a voice for the working class, and never forgot where he came from. As a native of the Jersey Shore, Springsteen felt a strong connection to the local music scene and still frequents the local bars and clubs he played as a young artist."Born to Run" is unlike most of Bruce Springsteen's other songs due mostly to the lyrical content he uses. Why is it different?

Bruce Springsteen is singing about his love for a woman

Doo-wop is an unaccompanied style of close-harmony singing by groups of usually four or five members that developed in the late 1940s and thrived in the early 1950s. The term "doo-wop" itself derives from the ad-lib syllables used while singing the harmony parts. The origins of doo-wop are traceable to nineteenth-century barbershop singing and to the music of such flagship groups as the Ink Spots in the 1930s and the Orioles in the late 1940s.

Memphis Blues (written in 1909 and published in 1912) is credited as the first published blues song and makes use of the stride piano style where the pianists' left hand plays big interval leaps in the bass range. Although this style of piano playing was commonly found in brothels and saloons, it was composed in this case as an election campaign song for Mr. Edward H. Crump when he ran for Mayor of Memphis. W.C. Handy changed the lyrics after the campaign from supporting Mr. Crump to the words you hear in this version in protest of Mr. Crump closing the brothels (where piano players frequently worked) in an effort to clean up the city.

tion 10:User Answer Correct Nirvana - Kurt Cobain (vocals and guitar), Krist Novoselic (vocals and bass), Dave Grohl (drums)Nirvana was formed in Aberdeen, Washington and has had the same members since 1990. They released three albums in their career all of which received some level of success and acclaim. A clear influence of Pixies, Sonic Youth, and The Velvet Underground can be heard in Nirvana's sound. Nirvana's first album Bleach was released in 1989, and was said to have been greatly influenced by their record label. This album has a raw, and thin sound and was recorded for under 600 dollars. Through touring, and constant promotion this album became a marginal success for the band. In the Fall of 1992 Nirvana released Nevermind, which is considered the apex of their career. Due to chart topping hits such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" this album went platinum ten times. However, due to the nature of success "Smells Like Teen Spirit" received the band considered this track to be more closely related to pop music of the time rather than grunge. Nevermind is much more refined than it's predecessor and blended catchy lyrics with their signature style. By blending grunge with pop Nirvana helped move grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream. In 1993 Nirvana released In Utero, but a large amount of controversy started surrounding the band. Kurt Cobain's drug abuse, and mental instability led to a heroine overdose and a suicide attempt. This would be the first of many events leading up to Nirvana's demise. As a result of the controversy however, Nirvana received a lot of attention for In Utero. The strong polished production of this album attracted new audiences, and sold more than 4 million copies. More drug overdoses, suicide attempts, and substance abuse issues followed the release of In Utero until Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home. Much like his life however, controversy followed the circumstances of his death. Source: Stephen Thomas Erlewine, The All Music GuideNirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the break away hit for the album Nevermind. True (yes) or False (no): As you listen to "Smells Like Teen Spirit," read the description above and determine whether the members of Nirvana would consider this song to be the epitome of the grunge style?

Bill Haley is one of the most important early Rock 'n' Roll stars to make a successful transition from country music to rock. Even though we consider the first real Rock song to be Ike Turner & Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" (which Haley covered in 1951!), it was Bill Haley with "Rock Around The Clock" that had the first #1 hit on the pop charts. "Rock Around The Clock" first made the charts in mid-1954, but fell short at #56. It then reached the top of the charts after it was used in the 1954 movie Blackboard Jungle which propelled the song to #1 in July 1955. Haley re-recorded "Rock Around The Clock" in 1973 and it was used until 1976 as the opening credits for the TV show Happy Days. Their early work was in the glam rock mode but they soon developed a more individual style through Mercury's camp stage moves and witty lyrics. This was evident on Bohemian napster (1975), a six-minute song that was accompanied by a spectacular video which inaugurated the modern era of music video. Later hits included We are the champions (1977), which became a sports event anthem, the disco-inflected Another one bites the dust (1980), Under Pressure (1981), which featured guest vocals by David Bowie, and Radio Ga-Ga (1984). Their last album with Mercury, who died of AIDS-related illnesses, was Innuendo (1991) whose title referred to rumours of the singer's ill health. The group subsequently disbanded although Mercury, May and Taylor had already undertaken several solo recording projects such as Mercury's duets with Montserrat Caballé and Taylor's work with the group the Cross. - Source: Dave Laing, Grove Music Online "We Will Rock You" was one of Queen's most popular live performance songs. tion 9:User Answer Correct Madonna (Louise Veronica Ciccone)Madonna was born in 1958 and become the first female pop star that had complete creative control of her music. Her sexuality was known to manipulate her audience through her videos and lyrics. Madonna initially dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer so she moved from her hometown Michigan to New York in 1977. Her career took off shortly after that when she met a new boyfriend who made her leave the projects she was working on to pursue dance music. A demo of her work eventually made its way to Mark Kamins, a producer in New York. He took that tape to Sire Records and it was there Kamins produced Madonna's first single "Everybody" in 1982. In the song "I Know His Blood Can Make Me Whole," by Blind Willie Johnson, the droning deep south slide guitar playing is introduced and is particularly evident. These days we play slide guitar by using a manufactured apparatus that fits over one of your fingers specifically designed to create this sound as it moves over the neck of the guitar; in Johnson's day this was done with a pocket knife, or a bottle neck. Johnson also used a great deal of religious content in his music and was known to preach on the street with songs like this one. Muddy Waters is one of the pioneers of the Chicago riff based blues. In the electric blues we hear the vocals, guitar and bass become amplified, the addition of drums, and the amplified harmonica becoming a prominent instrument. In the song "Hoochie Coochie Man" listen to the harmonica and electric guitar play the opening riff that sets up the mood for Muddy Waters to sing. This song was Waters' way of introducing himself to Chicago as not only an accomplished bluesman, but as a tough, wealthy, good-looking and lucky guy. To reinforce this, he gave himself the name the "Hoochie Coochie Man" and asked Willie Dixon to write this song boasting of his prowess and arrival in Chicago.

In verse one, Muddy begins by singing : The gypsy woman told my mother Later in verse one, Muddy sings : Make pretty women jump and shout In verse two, Muddy begins by singing : I got a black cat bone, and a mojo too Later in verse two, Muddy sings : I'm gonna make you girls lead me by my hand In verse three, Muddy begins by singing about : The number seven and good luck Later in verse three, Muddy states : Don't you mess with me

The song "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes is a classic example of Phil Spector's wall of sound. Spector achieved this sound by using 4-5 of each instrument in the studio (5 guitars, 5 saxes, 5 percussionists etc.) and a lot of echo to make his records sound bigger and fuller than everyone else when played on the 1960s jukeboxes, car radios and home record players. Remember that there was no surround sound, or even stereo then - mono was the only thing available! Interestingly, with this massive orchestration, Spector never let his drummers use cymbals (he felt they interrupted the sound)!! In "Be My Baby," which of Spector's favourite instrument groups plays the solo?

estion 2:User Answer Correct Alice Cooper (aka Vincent Damon Furnier)Alice Cooper, the king of shock rock, pioneered a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all coordinated by the heavily made-up Cooper. While the visuals were extremely important to the group's impact, the band's music was nearly as distinctive. Driven by raw, simple riffs and melodies that derived from '60s guitar pop as well as show tunes, it was rock & roll at its most basic and catchy, even when the band ventured into psychedelia and art rock. In 1968 Frank Zappa signed Alice Cooper to his Straight Records label and released their first album, Pretties for You, in 1969 and Easy Action in early in 1970. After moving to Warner Brothers in 1971 to release Love It to Death, Cooper began to develop a more impressive, elaborate live show, which made him highly popular across the U.S. and in the U.K. The album Killer was released late in 1971 setting up Coopers biggest albums 1972's, School's Out and 1973's Billion Dollar Babies, which was the group's biggest hit, reaching number one in both America and Britain; the single, "No More Mr. Nice Guy" has since become a classic rock standard. Welcome to My Nightmare was released in 1975 followed by other significant records including Alice Cooper Goes to Hell (1976), From the Inside (1978), Constrictor (1986), Trash (1989), Hey Stoopid (1991), The Last Temptation (1994), Fistful of Alice (1997), Brutal Planet and Dragontown (2000), The Eyes of Alice Cooper (2003), Dirty Diamonds (2005), Along Came a Spider (2008), and Theatre of Death and Alice Does Alice (2010). Chapter 9: Bob Dylan

Many consider Robert Allen Zimmerman (aka Bob Dylan) the most influential folk singer/song writer of the twentieth century. He brought political topics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences into mainstream music, but he considered himself more of a poet than a musician. His songs from the 1960s became anthems for the anti-war and civil rights movements, and he holds the credit for bringing more intelligent and artistic themes to rock and roll. For over five decades Dylan has maintained a consistent output of music that has evolved with the current music trends.

Chapter 20 Where Do We Go from Here?

Other artists of significant influence in rock 'n' roll history In the preface of this book I describe our intent to provide an "appetizer" for rock 'n' roll. It is impossible to cover every significant artist and detail every success (or failure!) of the artists that we cover in a text designed for a one-semester course. We have provided what we believe to be a "well-rounded overview" of the evolution of rock 'n' roll that educates both the novice on the origins and innovations of this music, and, fills some gaps for the more experienced enthusiast. With over 15,000 students completing UNLV's History of Rock course with this text since 2008, there hasn't been a single student walk away without discovering, not one, but many pieces of information they found enlightening. That certainly makes us happy as authors and course developers; however, we receive requests constantly to add other significant artists that have impacted rock music history. The conundrum is that we want to stay away from relatively new artists, despite major success in some cases, due to the fact they are not yet in the "history" of rock 'n' roll. But, we do want to recognize major contributions. Over the past few years, we've kept track of these requests while simultaneously researching pivotal points, changes and trends. We have now added this chapter to feature artists and bands who we believe have made contributions to rock 'n' roll that have changed, defined and reshaped the art-form. This chapter will most likely be in a constant state of evolution, but we are pleased to introduce some major innovators in rock 'n' roll. TJ

Surf Music

Surf music began as a transfer of the adrenaline from surfing to music, especially through the electric guitar. The surf style branched into exotic harmonies with vocals inspired by the doo-wop and girl group sound, and themes about surfing, girls, hot rods and the California beach life. The music is not only inherently Californian, but it also evolved completely in southern California before bursting onto a national level with The Beach Boys. The great guitar builder Leo Fender worked closely with many surf artists, especially Dick Dale, and made resulting improvements to his guitars and amplifiers that would further rock music as a whole. With the popularity of Fender's Precision Bass, surf music became one of the first genres to universally adopt the electric bass.

Bob Dylan's song "Oxford Town" captures in less than 3 minutes the seriousness and ridiculous nature of segregation in one of the worlds most forward thinking countries. The following is a brief description of the events outlined in the song:In the fall of 1962 the college town of Oxford, Mississippi, erupted in violence. At the center of the controversy stood Jaterm-257mes Meredith, an African American who was attempting to register at the all-white University of Mississippi, known as "Ole Miss." Meredith had the support of the federal government, which insisted that Mississippi honor the rights of all its citizens, regardless of race. Mississippi's refusal led to a showdown between state and federal authorities and the storming of the campus by a segregationist mob. Two people died and dozens were injured. In the end, Ole Miss, the state of Mississippi, and the nation were forever changed. Punk Rock

Punk is a term that the press originally used in the late 1960s to slander less than average rock bands who they felt were trying to make a statement. As time went on, the name applied to bands that had a certain type of attitude, or whose themes went against the mainstream. The idea of embracing the name didn't come about until the mid-1970s as audiences latched onto something with which they could identify. Punk can mean reckless, inspiring or revolutionary. It can mean an attitude of rebellion against tradition, a form of rock music with deliberately offensive lyrics expressing anger and social alienation and even a fashion concept.

Chapter 17 Acid Rock

The "Summer of Love" refers to the summer of 1967 and the social rebellion against white collar America when over one hundred thousand young people living in San Francisco renounced what they considered the establishment's ideals for society. As a result, a counter culture, otherwise known as the "hippie movement," emerged bringing a focus to the social elements of life with music, psychedelic drugs (especially LSD), philosophical exploration, sexual freedom, communal living and creative expression. Musically, we tend to trace the roots of the Summer of Love back to 1965 and the formation of the many bands that would define that famous summer two years later. The coming of age for psychedelic music (acid rock) was the "Human Be-in" held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in January 1967. This event really marks the birth of the hippie movement, acid rock and the multiple day rock festival.

n 8:User Answer Correct Lynyrd SkynyrdLynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most influential Southern rock bands of all time. The original members consisted of Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, Allen Collins on guitar, and Gary Rossington on guitar. They all attended high school together in Jacksonville, FL. The three of them formed the band called "My Backyard". Later on, they added bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell, and drummer Bob Burns. With this new line up, they called the band Lynyrd Skynyrd and began performing shows all over the South. They had little success at first however Al Kooper signed the band to MCA after seeing one show in Atlanta. For a more edgy sound, they added a third guitar player Ed King. Three guitars became the standard image of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were featured in the song "Free Bird" which was dedicated to Duane Allman after his death. The band's sound can be described as powerful blues-rock with a rebel redneck image. Sadly, the band did not become popular until Van Zant's death in a tragic plane crash. - Source: Stephen Thomas Erlewine, The All Music Guide. The end of Lynyrd Skynyrd's hit "Free Bird" features a very famous extended guitar solo. The tempo getting into the guitar solo does what?

Speeds up like a bird taking off in flight.

The British Invasion "The British Invasion" is the term used to describe the wave of British rock bands that dominated the American music charts primarily from 1964 to 1967. The characteristic sound of the British invasion was a blend of American blues, country and early rock and roll, fused with British pop and skiffle music. There were many British rock bands that became popular throughout the UK and Europe in the early 1960s, but only a handful entered the U.S. charts and had an impact on the direction rock music took in the mid to late 1960s. The first wave of British bands came primarily from Liverpool where the "beat boom" or "beat music" flourished, and then from Manchester, London and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Chapter 15 Motown

"Motown" encompasses three record labels, Tamla, Motown and Gordy, several small subsidiary labels, the Jobete music publishing company, a style of music, and a family of musicians, singers, songwriters and producers, all under the direction of Berry Gordy. The term "Motown" relates to the "Motown Record Corporation," and this chapter uses it throughout to describe all of the above. The name "Motown" derives from the nickname for Detroit called "motor town" because of the many automotive factories around the city. The most productive era for Motown was the Detroit years of 1959 to 1972 that earned the original house and recording studio the nickname "Hitsville USA." Berry Gordy, the man responsible for creating Motown, brought a new level of respect to rock and roll with polished, sharp performers (essentially black artists). He also prided himself on his ability to locate talent, shape his artists and send them out as superstars. Motown went on to become one of the most influential forces socially and musically in America, sustaining multiple songs on the charts at a single time, before the company relocated to Los Angeles in June 1972.

The western swing style is a blend of jazz and country music where improvisation over a predetermined group of chords, tempo and rhythm allows for western swing songs to evolve uniquely in every performance. In this example of the "San Antonio Rose" these influences are clearly heard, but an older style of "calling" from country dances is is also present. "Calling" means that a member of the band speaks directions, or lyrics (often sounding like a conversation) during parts of the song in addition to singing.

"San Antonio Rose" is predominantly SUNG, but includes some CALLED (spoken) elements

Chapter 16 Soul and FUNK

"Soul" refers to a style of music that evolved as an expression of the need for social change in America (particularly in the South), which came to a critical point in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This era brought hundreds of years of civil inequality, Jim Crow laws and racial prejudice to the breaking point through a variety of events, written actions to the government, and rallies, protests, and riots for human rights. Many Americans made a stand for the desegregation of schools, restaurants, public transport, drinking fountains and other amenities. Soul music supported and expressed people's needs by voicing these concerns, uniting the population and often maintaining peace when things reached the boiling point.

James Brown becomes known as the hardest working man in show business and the Godfather of Soul. He uses the song "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to introduce his new funk sound by making the drums and bass the most important instruments in his sound and making all other instruments (guitars and horn section) play very short notes with a groove. Brown references several dances from Dick Clark's American Bandstand in this song. Which of the following dances is NOT mentioned in "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"?

"Tutti Frutti" was the first big rock 'n' roll hit for Little Richard and carries many traits of his exciting upbeat music and introduced his famous gospel "Whooooo" vocal effect. The members of the group often shared the vocals, if there were any, but in some cases they were also the guitarist's responsibility. The rise of the power trio took place in England with two of rock and roll's greatest bands leading the way: Cream featuring Eric Clapton and, most famously, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Heavy metal is an electric guitar-driven style of music that developed in Britain in the mid 1960s generally supported by powerful drum and bass rhythms. The guitarist's use of power chords and heavy, dark tonalities helped to define this style along with influences from classical music, the blues, and in many cases, an aggressive vocal style. Heavy metal lyrics and themes often portray darkness, evil, the apocalypse, negative imagery, war, political and religious themes; although in many cases these themes are made to be the focus due to negative media attention toward the style. One can describe the heavy metal music as high energy, generally loud and requiring a high level of technical proficiency from all of the musicians.

Chapter 14: Rolling Stones and The Who

The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest rock and roll bands in history. Able to move with the times, they have maintained popularity with each generation, produced more than sixty albums and influenced trends in music for over forty-five years. Unlike many other British invasion bands of the same period, the Rolling Stones had a background steeped in the blues rather than English "beat music." The Who formed in London in 1964 as part of the hip "Mod" scene and donned strategically ripped jeans, pop icon t-shirts and a persona of intellectual rebellion. The band members embodied whatever was "in" on London's famous Carnaby Street and spoke out, through their music, about the troubles and declining social status of England's youth.

The song "I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow," which was used in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou, is an excellent example of country music blended with Cajun and Zydeco music styles from the Southern regions of the USA. In this song an important Southern music device is used that influenced the honky tonk and Nashville styles of country music. This device involves the bass (lowest sounding instrument) playing what we call a "two feel" in music. Using your understanding of tempo (speed), which of the following answers best describes a two feel?

The bass sounds as if it is playing slower than the rest of the music.

"My Girl," by Smokey Robinson for the Temptations, was the first #1 hit in the U.S. (in 1965) for the long lasting Motown group. The previous year, Robinson wrote a similar song, "My Guy," for Motown singer Mary Wells. That song carried the same sentiment of unconditional love as "My Girl," but from a female perspective. Many songs have a hook, or something very catchy that helps fans identify the song when it is played or performed. What is one of the most distinguishable characteristics found in "My Girl"?

The continuous guitar riff throughout the whole song

"Space Oddity," released in 1969 (a play on the title Space Odyssy) by David Bowie: In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter magazine, Bowie explained: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn't. It was written because of going to see the film 2001 (Space Odyssy), which I found amazing. I was out of my gourd anyway, I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me. It got the song flowing. It was picked up by the British television, and used as the background music for the landing itself. I'm sure they really weren't listening to the lyric at all (laughs). In the opening 1:10 of "Space Oddity" a single snare drum is heard interjecting sporadic accompaniments to help set the "spacey" mood. As you listen to the rest of the song, identify which of the following statements best represents what happens with the drums.

The drums go into a rock groove for the main body of the song and then gradually break down to cymbals and other drum-set special effects.

The organ (keyboard instrument) : Plays throughout the Doors version The Harmonica : Plays throughout the Willie Dixon version The slide guitar : Is the solo instrument in the Willie Dixon version

Allen Ginsberg is cherished as a pivotal figure between the 50s Beat Generation and the counter-cultural revolution of the 1960s. Ginsberg's "America," "Howl" and other poems were subject to a famous obscenity trial due to the frank treatment of his homosexuality and other explicit and controversial content. The case became a "cause célèbre" for defenders of freedom of speech. As you listen to "America," a number of issues Ginsberg saw as needing reform are brought up, but which topic does he specifically address?

The political relationship with Russia and China

Listen to the Platters version of the song "Twilight Time" (the original was made by The Three Suns) and identify which instrument(s) do not appear in The Platters popular re-make of this 1940s classic.

The song "Honey Love" was banned from air play by many radio stations because it was considered too obscene. Many early rock 'n' roll songs met a similar fate because of the perceived references to sex in the lyrics. The Everly Brothers' "Wake up Little Susie" was the first of four #1 hits for the duo. The song follows the country music formula of story telling where two teenagers miss their curfew after falling asleep (or so they say!) at a boring drive-in movie. The fact that the song even left a question about whether they fell asleep, or perhaps had sex, meant the song was banned from radio play on many stations. Really it's quite an innocent song that captures the essence of being a teenager in the 1950s. Listen to the song and determine which of the following things the singer and little Susie are NOT concerned about?

They don't have enough gas to get home

John Lee Hooker is often referred to as the last link to the (early) Delta blues and preferred to still perform by himself after he adopted the electric guitar as his primary instrument. In many recordings you can hear him tapping the body of the guitar, or stomping on the floor with his foot. Hooker was a master of using the old blues traditions in a modern blues world, which made him an intriguing performer and very popular. Listen to the guitar in "Boogie Chillun'" and determine whether this is a riff based blues, or a call and response style blues?

This is a riff based blues

Four of country music's greatest singers, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash, worked together as the group the Highwaymen to perform this example of outlaw country music. "My Ding-a-Ling" was the only song that made it to #1 on the Billboard charts for Chuck Berry. The story also changes, or becomes more elaborate, depending on the interpretation of the singer. Here is the original newspaper article that inspired the song: "SHOT IN CURTIS'S PLACE" St Louis Globe-Democrat, December 26, 1895... "William Lyons, 25, coloured, a levee hand, living at 1410 Morgan Street, was shot in the abdomen yesterday evening at 10 o'clock in the saloon of Bill Curtis, at Eleventh and Morgan streets, by Lee Sheldon, also coloured. "Both parties, it seems, had been drinking, and were feeling in exuberant spirits. Lyons and Sheldon were friends and were talking together. The discussion drifted to politics, and an argument was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Sheldon's hat from his head. "The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon drew his revolver and shot Lyons in the abdomen [...] When his victim fell to the floor, Sheldon took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away." estion 5:User Answer Correct Jimi Hendrix's version of the "Star Spangled Banner" is quite poignant because obviously he feels patriotic about his country, but there are some underlying themes if you listen carefully. The destructive explosions on the guitar are a protest to the war in Vietnam, and his sadness for innocent lives being lost is represented by the "taps" theme at 2:40. He also plays part of the melody in a minor key ("our flag was still there") to represent that although he loves his country, he recognizes that there are some things that need fixing and healing in order to move forward. The performance of this at Woodstock in 1969 must have been a very moving moment. Through all the craziness, guitar soloing and sounds of destruction, Hendrix makes the National Anthem still hold true. The question is... Does Hendrix actually play the whole National Anthem (sing the lyrics in your head as he plays to find out)?

Yes

Chapter 8: Folk Music

mus 125 The best description of folk music is "music by the people, for the people." Traditionally folk was a kind of music passed on orally through family and generations, rather than music formally composed or written down. The composers of folk music are often anonymous with much of the recorded and published folk music categorized as "traditional." Folk music gets its title from folklore, meaning that the music generally represents common themes, traditions, nostalgia, social topics and community. The music often involves group partici- pation and is rarely about elevating an artist to stardom. The performers are in many cases amateur, and they do not produce the majority of their music to make a profit. Protest music that introduced political themes, and the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, brought folk music into mainstream popularity, but it also provided a vehicle for the music industry to capitalize on this centuries-old form of music. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and their associated groups are the pivotal figures to the folk revival that saw artists like The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell rise to fame.
