nervous system 2
white matter
White matter is a component of the central nervous system, in the brain and superficial spinal cord, and consists mostly of glial cells and myelinated axons that transmit signals from one region of the cerebrum to another and between the cerebrum and lower brain centers.
efferent
conducted or conducting outward or away from something (for nerves, the central nervous system; for blood vessels, the organ supplied).
gray matter
cross section of the spinal chord located in the center primarly composed of cell bodies internearons and sysnpase
dermatome
the lateral wall of each somite in a vertebrate embryo, giving rise to the connective tissue of the skin.
reflex arc sensory arc
the nerve pathway involved in a reflex action including at its simplest a sensory nerve and a motor nerve with a synapse between.
reflex center
the spinal chord acts like a major reflex center
cranial neuron
A cranial nerve nucleus is a collection of neurons (gray matter) in the brain stem that is associated with one or more cranial nerves.
spinal nerves
A spinal nerve is a mixed nerve, which carries motor, sensory, and autonomic signals between the spinal cord and the body
mixed nerves
Efferent nerves conduct signals from the central nervous system along motor neurons to their target muscles and glands. Mixed nerves contain both afferent and efferent axons, and thus conduct both incoming sensory information and outgoing muscle commands in the same bundle.
afferent neuron
Neurons that receive information from our sensory organs (e.g. eye, skin) and transmit this input to the central nervous system are called afferent neurons.
nerve tracts
a nerve pathway from the lateral geniculate body to the visual cortex. commissure. a bundle of nerve fibers passing from one side to the other of the brain or spinal cord. cerebral peduncle, peduncle. a bundle of myelinated neurons joining different parts of the brain.Aug 25, 2014
plexus
a network of nerves or vessels in the body. an intricate network or weblike formation.
peripheral nervous system
is the part of the nervous system that consists of the nerves and ganglia on the outside of the brain and spinal cord.
