ANI
Automatic Number Identification A more complex version of caller ID
BTN
Billing telephone number

Border Gateway Protocol, is one of the core routing protocols used by most of the service providers on the Internet. BGP can run as either an interior or exterior protocoL Main role is to transmit routes BGP uses autonomous systems (AS routers) to choose the best route
CSU
Channel Service Unit A device used to terminate a digital channel on a customer's premises. It performs certain line coding, line conditioning and equalization functions, and responds to loopback commands sent from the central office.
CUBE
Cisco Unified Border Element
D channel
Data channel) A special channel on T1 PRI or E1 PRI lines that carries information about the voice or phone channels such as the phone number the call came from (ANI information), and what phone number it is going to. (DNIS information)
DIA
Dedicated Internet Access high reliability and performance including constant speeds guaranteed by a Service Level Agreement (SLA).
Demarc
Demarcation Point where the customer equipment turns into the carrier equipment. Carriers will work on all equipment up to the demarc. Anything passed this will be the customer responsibility (cpe)
Dsl
Digital Subscriber Line. A method of connecting to the Internet via a phone line. A DSL connection uses copper telephone lines but is able to relay data at much higher speeds than modems and does not interfere with telephone use.
DID
Direct Inward Dialing DID system can be used for fax and voice mail as well as for live voice connections.
UCAAS
UNified communication as a service a cloud delivery model that offers a variety of communication and collaboration applications and services. Simpily, cool communication software. Like messaging and video chat for business people. Ring central is a soft phone and is a huge example of UCaaS. RC Offers advance calling features, messaging, and video chat, all delivered over the cloud. Ring Central , Nextiva, 8x8, Vonage, Skype for Business
Disconnect
When internet service is turned off, or contract terminates without renewal. This usually follows with a new circuit to support internet or voice
Loopback
a type of interface not assigned to a physical port, and which is always up, and sometime used for testing We use this for monitoring in Auvik Refers to the routing of electronic signals, digital data streams, or flows of items back to their source is primarily a means of testing the transmission or transportation infrastructure.
Ethernet cable
cable that connects computers to the LAN that allows the computers to communicate with each other. It has 8 pins at the end Standard is a cat5
CPE
equipment physically located at a customer premise, such as a switch or a router
Call recording
to record a telephone call or other audio source.
Trunk
trunking is a method for a system to provide network access to many clients by sharing a set of lines or frequencies instead of providing them individually. This is analogous to the structure of a tree with one trunk and many branches.
VPN (ext definition)
virtual private network extends a private network across a public network, and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network.
HLO
Higher level outage An internet outage on a higher level usually from a fiber cut spanning across a city This usually calls many customers to go offline
LEC (last mile)
LEC (local exchange carrier) is the term for a public telephone company in the U.S. that provides local service. LEC companies are also sometimes referred to as "telcos." A "local exchange" is the local "central office" of an LEC.
NID
Network Interface Device (Same as SJ Or smartjack) the NID separates the telephone company's equipment from the customer's wiring and equipment. The telephone company owns the NID itself, and all wiring up to it. Anything past the NID is the customer's responsibility
POTs
Plain Old Telephone Service standard telephone service that most homes use. basically an analog voice transmission phone system implemented over copper twisted pair wires. Good detailed explanation at: https://www.nextiva.com/blog/what-is-pots.html
Porting
Porting is transferring a phone number (xxx-xxx-xxxx) from one service provider to another. taking your number with you
Channel
A channel is a single digital line or port that can hold a phone conversation
ETTR
Estimated time to repair When the technician will be done working and service will be restored
POE
Power over Ethernet a technology that lets network cables carry electrical power. For example, a digital security camera normally requires two connections to be made when it is installed: A network connection, in order to be able to communicate with video recording and display equipment A power connection, to deliver the electrical power the camera needs to operate However, if the camera is POE-enabled, only the network connection needs to be made, as it will receive its electrical power from this cable as well. Power over Ethernet reduces the number of cables required to connect
PRI
Primary Rate Interface The Primary Rate Interface is an interface standard used on an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) for carrying multiple DS0 voice and data transmissions between the network and a user It's used to deliver multiple lines of voice and data through physical copper lines that are part of your building's physical infrastructure. A PRI circuit includes 23 voice channels to support 23 concurrent calls, and one data channel to support call-related functionality like caller ID. Type of voice telephone delivery (Two today are VoIP delivered over SIP and then PRI) Check out: https://www.atlantech.net/blog/pri-vs.-sip-trunking-whats-the-difference-and-which-is-best
PBX
Private Branch Exchange. A telephone switch used to take incoming trunk phone lines and route them to the appropriate extensions inside a company. An extension routes you to a particular phone in a business Like 866-934-9638 opt 1

VoIP
SIP data circuit carrying voice Stands for voice over internet protocol A newer technology that allows phone conversations to be digitized and sent as packets of information transferable over the Internet or local networks and then translated back into phone conversations.
SIP
Session Initiation Protocol is a set of technological standards that support VoIP calls by initiating and ending calls between a VoIP line and another phone number. SIP supports the transmission of voice calls as data as well as other types of multimedia communications. SIP is a phone technology, but it supports the transmission of Unified Communications including video conferencing, SMS messages, data transmissions, and more.
SJ

LCON
The local contact is the IT person responsible for network connection at the site level
Packet loss
The situation in which data bits are lost in transit, requiring them to be resent which significantly increases the time required for an intact message to arrive at its destination Basically slower data transmission Packet Loss occurs when one or more packets of data travelling across a computer network fail to reach their destination. This can be caused by numerous things (ie network congestion)
Extension lines
Thin lines used to establish the extent of a dimension. Extension lines begin with a short space from the object and extend to about .125 inches past the last dimension line. Extension lines may cross object lines, center lines, hidden lines, and other extension lines, but may not cross dimension lines.
Analog line
This is also called POTs supports standard phones, fax machines, and modems. These are the lines typically found in your home or small office.
