Despite having a club foot and wearing a cast as a child, Mia Hamm was a talented, hardworking athlete from a very young age. She played her first organized soccer match at six and joined an 11 year old boys' soccer team and led in scoring at 10. At 15, she became the youngest player to join the national soccer team. She played college soccer at North Carolina and won four national championships. She started the Mia Hamm Foundation to honor her brother who died of a blood disorder.
