Ocean acidification lab
What factors affect the CCD?
Higher concentrations, and temperatures, and higher pressures
What is the pH range that has no carbonate?
4-6
What is the surrender pH of seawater?
8.1-8.2
What is the pH range that has no carbon dioxide?
9-11
What is the scientific formula for bicarbonate?
HCO_3^-1
What is the dominant species in seawater?
Bicarbonate
What is the scientific formula for carbon dioxide?
CO_2
What is a chemical equation for carbon dioxide reacting with water to form carbonic acid?
CO_2 +H_2O = H_2CO_3
What is the scientific formula for carbonate?
CO_3^-2
What is the scientific formula for calcium carbonate?
CaCo_3
What is CCD?
Carbonate Compensation Depth: the depth at which calcium carbonate shells dissolve
How do you determine the pH of a solution?
Count the decimal places before the whole number: Ex) .0001 That would be four because you move the decimal four places to make the number one
What is the scientific formula for carbonic acid?
H_2CO_3
What is the dominant carbon species at the lowest pH? Highest?
Lowest: carbon dioxide. Highest: carbonate
Why is the pH of seawater expected to decrease over time?
More carbon dioxide is going into the water
What is the scientific formula for sodium?
NaCl
What will happen to the CCD is pH decreases?
The CCD will rise and the level at which the calcium carbonate shells dissolve will become more shallow.
How does CCD affect ocean life?
The more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere made the CCD levels go up, meaning the depth at which the shells dissolve goes up.
