Old Testament: Proverbs
How does one go about reading and interpreting proverbs as a genre?
1. Because of their terse style, proverbs are not to be skimmed or read quickly. Their condensed language makes it necessary to read them slowly and contemplatively. These time-honored truths take time to fathom. 2. Always be looking for the underlying principle of the statement. 3. Remember their broad and general nature. Take them on their own terms, as general observations about how life works.
What is a proverb? What is a proverb NOT?
A proverb is a succinct and persuasive saying proven true by experience. It is a general principle about life. But it is important also to understand what a proverb is not. 1. Proverbs are NOT promises. (See Prov. 22:6) 2. Proverbs are NOT commands. (See Prov. 22:24-25, 27) Rather than promises or commands to be applied in every case, the proverbs are general principles of life. Here is the wisdom of the ages, tried and true, compelling in its presentation and uplifting in its ethics.
What are the issues regarding authorship of Proverbs?
Evidence suggests that Solomon composed many of them, and may have been responsible for collecting the others. But Solomon should not be considered the sole author of the book. It is entirely possible that later editors collected the proverbs of Solomon along with those of others in bringing the book into its final form.
