What is diffraction

It is when waves spread out when they pass through a gap or pass an object.

Why doesn't light diffract much?

Light has a very small wavelength so it needs a very small gap in order to diffract.

What does the amount of diffraction depend on?

The amount of diffraction depends on the size of the gap relative to the wavelength of the wave.

Why can you hear someone through an open door even if you can't see them?

The size of the gap and the wavelength of sound are equal causing the sound wave to diffract and fill the room.

What is the size of a shadow dependant on?

The wider the object compared to the wavelength, the less diffraction it causes, so the longer the shadow.

What happens if the gap is just a bit wider than the wavelength?

There is diffraction at the edges.

What happens if the gap is much wider than the wavelength?

There is little diffraction.

What happens if the gap is the same length as the wavelength?

There is maximum diffraction.
