Paragraph unity
(uni=one) The paragraph focuses on ONE idea and must have: -Main Idea -Topic Sentence -Adequate Support(Supporting Sentences)=Imagery, facts, specific examples, many details, anecdotes -No wondering off topics -Clincher sentence
Adequate Support
3 or more supporting facts, examples, etc. to support the topic sentence
Logical Order
Question that you ask leads to the order -Pros and Cons -Advantages/Disadvantages -Compare/Contrast
Can the topic sentence be anywhere in the paragraph?
Yes, however it is expected first.
Topic Sentence
a focused, one sentence that states the ONE key point of the entire paragraph. The introductory ideas must be given first. ex.(Intro ideas) I am a student at Loyola. (Topic sentence)Loyola is the best high school in the world.
Spatial Order
a physical description (head to feet/feet to head)
Order of Importance
least to most important ex. Why I attend Loyola( 1 being least 5 being most) 1. Good food 2. Dances are good 3. Sports program 4. Academic acceleration 5. Get into a good college
Paragraph coherence
logical connection of thoughts or supportive details in a paragraph. Types of orders: -Chronological -Spatial -Order of Importance -Logical
Clincher Sentence
restates supporting details or the topic sentence to bring attention back to the topic. It can be implied or could just lead to the next paragraph
Chronological Order
stated according to time
