Parts of Speech Review: Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Adverbs and Prepositions

What is a noun?

A noun is a person, place, thing, concept, or idea. Example: Chair, table, desk, freedom

What is a preposition?

A preposition is a word that connects nouns and pronouns to other words and phrases in the sentence. Examples: The cat sat on the piano. I went to the store for milk. I went to the concert with my mom.

What is a verb?

A verb is a word that states an action or a state of being. There can be multiple verbs in a sentence. Examples: I ran to the gym. I walked around the mall. Today I will swim in Lake Champlain. I am angry. Studying will result in a good grade.

What is an adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It often answers questions such as "What kind?", "Which?", or "How many?". Examples: I ate an enormous dinner. The cat is chubby and orange.

What is an adverb?

An adverb is a word that describes verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Adverbs answer how something is done, where, when and why. Examples: She sang beautifully. That woman is extremely kind. It was a terribly hot and muggy afternoon. I am going to the park tomorrow at three o'clock. Snow is everywhere!
