Persuasive Text Types

Blog: Features

-Author may often not use their real name and use their 'online name'. -Usually has a heading at the top of the page. -Often includes images and videos that partner the written text.

Letter to the Editor

-Brief - usually fewer than 200 words. -Written is response to a previously published material. -Letter writers sign off with their name and suburb.

Editorial: Features

-Has a clear contention. -Uses reason and evidence to support the argument. -Has a headline and sometimes a subheading. -Presents the arguments for both sides but gives a definite opinion.

Opinion Piece: Features

-Has a headline and may have a subheading. -Has a by-line giving the writer's name. -Uses evidence and logical argument to present a considered opinion.

News Article: Features

-Has a headline and sometimes a subheading (sometimes a photo). -Has a by-line giving the journalist's name.

Cartoon: Features

-Often uses caricature (exaggeration of physical features. -May include in-text speech or speech bubbles. -Background, colour and symbols can add impact or convey point-of-view.

Blog: Language

-Tone is often informal/casual. -Often uses personal pronouns such as 'you', 'we' and 'I'. -Utilises interactive media (photos + videos). Welcomes comments.

News Article: Language

-Uses far less emotive language and usually has a serious tone. -Avoids personal pronouns such as 'I'.

Cartoon: Language

-Uses highly persuasive visual language. -Uses exaggeration and humour. Text and image work together.

Editorial: Language

-Uses persuasive language techniques. -Has an authoritative tone and often commands authority, often formal. -May use 'we' and 'us' to express the collective view of the newspaper.

Opinion Piece

-Uses persuasive language. -May use emotive language to target feelings of readers. -May use personal pronouns such as 'you', 'we' and 'I'.

-Usually uses highly persuasive writing. -Often uses personal pronouns such as 'you', 'we' and 'I'.

To give a clear point-of-view on a current issue. To contribute to public debate.

News Article: Purpose

To inform the reader about a current event as factually as possible.

Opinion Piece: Purpose

To present an opinion on a particular issue.

Blog: Purpose

To provide a more informal news source, often to be shared by others online.

Cartoon: Purpose

To provide comment on an issue with humour and wit.

Editorial: Purpose

To state the newspaper's view on the issue. Written by one or more of the editors of the paper.
