What three processes work together to move water up a plant

Capillary action, root pressure and transpiration

What cellular organelle needed for photosynthesis would be found in the ground tissue system?

Chloroplast

Vascular tissue system

Conducts water, mineral, nutrients, and carbohydrates made by photosynthesis.

Dermal tissue system

Covers the plant's entire body and serves as a protective layer.

To what human body system would you compare the dermal tissue system?

Integumentary

Ground tissue system

Performs photosynthesis, stores water and carbohydrates, assists transport, and surrounds and supports the conducting tissues.

Define phloem (p. 560). What does it conduct?

Phloem transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis to other parts of the plant.

Xylem provides structural support for the plant. To what human body system can this be compared?

Skeletal because it provides structural support to the human body.

Look at the picture of the human circulatory system. How is it similar to the xylem and phloem?

The human circulatory system acts as a transport system to distribute water, gasses, nutrients, etc to all the cells of the body. The plant vascular system transports water and nutrients to the plant cells.

Why would these structures allow a plant to live away from water?

The root system can sink far into the ground to find water. The transport system allows the water to be distributed throughout the plant in an efficient manner.

Name three structures that these plants have that bryophytes lack:

True roots True stems True leaves

What is the overall size of these plants? Why is it different from the bryophytes?

Vascular plants can vary from small plants like grass to large oak trees. Whereas bryophytes must be small.

vascular tissue

Vascular tissue is made up of a series of cells (xylem and phloem) that conduct water, minerals and dissolved carbohydrates throughout the plant.

Observe the carnation. What is happening? What vascular tissue is being used?

Water carrying the dye moved up the stem into the flower by using the vascular tissue (xylem)

Define xylem (p. 560). What does it conduct?

Xylem is a transport subsystem that is made of dead cells that transport water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the leaves
