A process to follow for developing effective reading habits
Four B's
Be supportive Be considerate Be accepting Be organized
O= Organize: Sure
Do something with what you have read. S= Select the facts and concepts you need to know U= Use the material you've selected R= Recite the information(self test) E= Examine your learning periodically (review)
P=Prepare to read before
Get ready to read 1. Purpose(know what your goal is for reading) 2.Preview(quickly look at the material before you start to read) 3. Previous knowledge(recognize what you already know about the subject) 4.Predict( ask questions about what you think you will learn)
R= Read Actively
Stay focused as you read. 1. Become involved 2. Be interested 3. Be alert and attentive 4. Monitor your involvement and comprehension
R= Reflect
Think as you read. 1. Discover new ideas 2. Connect new knowledge to previous knowledge 3. Use critical thinking skills to evaluate your new knowledge
Main Idea Sentence
a broad or general statement of the main point of the paragraph
Fight Distractions
all sorts of internal and external distractions compete for your attention
Be open-minded
be open to different perspectives and the opportunity to learn new things
Listen for content
focus on the topic and the opinions being expressed
Communicatation
is a process that involves at least two people a sender and a receiver
Aggressive Behavior
is domineering, intimidating, and inconsiderate behavior
Assertive behavior
is polite but forceful, independent, responsible, and considerate behavior
Manipulative behavior
is shrewd and devious
central idea
is the overall general statement or main point the author is making in a reading
Collaboration
means to work together cooperatively, as on a sports team
Paraphrase
restate in your own words what he or she said
Passive Behavior
shows submission, dependence, and avoidance of responsibility
Hearing
that sound of the words is registering in your brain
Listening
that you are paying attention to and thinking about what the words mean
