Postcrisis Phase

Attempts to reconcile with others. Returns to previous level of functioning. Remorse, apologies, crying, quiet/withdrawn behavior.

Crisis Phase

Client loses control during emotional/physical crisis. Loss of emotional/physical control, throwing, hitting, spitting, biting, scratching, screaming, can't think clearly.

Recovery Phase

Client regains physical/emotional control. Lowering of voice, decreased muscle tension, clearer communication, physically relaxed.

Escalation Phase

Heading toward loss of control. Pale/flushed face, yelling, swearing, agitated, threats, demands, fists, hostility, can't think clearly.

Triggering Phase

Something initiates response leading to anger/hostility characterized by restlessness, anxiety, irritability, pacing, muscle tension, tachypnea, perspiration, and loud voice.
