Psychology 1: Founding Fathers and 6 Approaches
Cognitive Approach
Emphasizes how humans use the mental procceses to handle problems. Treatment focuses on getting emotions under control, using reason
William James
Focused on how humans function and adapt to thier environment
Wilhelm Wundt
He is know as the father of psychology. Wundt believed that some things about humans can be measured in a scientific fashion. He founded the first labatory devoted to experiment study of the psychological phenomena. ** Wundt emphasized the analysis of the conscious process (A thought that you are aware of )**
Sigmund Freud
His theories are based on the effects of unconscious(something you're unaware of) conflicts within the individual. His interpretation of dreams are usually in the sexual nature.
Sigmund Freud divided the person into three parts:
Id, Ego, and superego
William James( Knowability VS. Unknowabailty)
James studied habits. Ex: getting up in the morning. James came up with the quote, " Our science is a drop, our ignorance a sea."
Humanistic Approach
People are basicallygood and capable of helping themselves. CARL ROGERS AND ABRAHAM MASLOW USED THE HUMANISTIC APPROACH. Analysis: Stress is a persons potential for growth. You will live up to what you think of yourself. All problems will workout if given enough time.
Psychanalytic Approach
The individual is the product of unconscious forces Analysis: focus is on sex and agression. FROYD AND FROMM USED PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH. The psychoanalytic approach believes that psychological problems are symtoms of inner conflicts repressed during childhood. THE PSYCHOANALYTIC TASK IS TO HELP THE CLIENT BRING THESE HIDDEN CONFLICTS TO CONSCIOUS AWARENESS SO THEY CAN BE EFFECTIVELY DELT WITH.
Biopsychological Approach
Views behavior as strongly influenced by psychological functions.
Behaviorism Approach
Views behavior as the product of learning and associations. -Focuses on what can be seen -we become what our environment forces us to be -WATSON AND SKINNER ARE BOTH BEHAVIORIST -To affect human behavior change a person must have proper punishments and reinforcements)
John B Watson
Watson studied behaviorism (emphasis on learning). Watson belived nearly everything you learn is caused by learning. He was the first to recieve a doctorate degree from the university of Chicago. Watson also believed that psychology was the study of observable measurable behavior. He did the white rat experiment (Lil Albert)
The word Client is used instead of pacient in psych because...
client infers relationship
