Superego

it is created later in childhood at 4 or 5. --it has several personality duties, like making sure the ego acts morally --it is conscious which makes us feel guilty when we do wrong & proud when you do right --

the conscious mind is the smallest part of the ice burg (ego) and the unconscious is well below the surface. Page 309

Ego

the part of our minds that balances that demands the id, the superego, and reality --it is conscious and unconscious: C(with the world) UN(contact w/ id) -- it is weakened from id in the first 5 years of life

theory of mind

-- right below the surface is the preconscious mind. includes mental processes that aren't currently conscious, but can. --below is the unconscious which is driven by biological urges --it contains thoughts, desires, feelings and memories that are not always available but shape us. --early childhood exsperiences determined later chioces b/c of power of the unconscious mind.

--reflected contemporary perspectives --Psychiatrist --The founder of Psychoanalysis which is studies how human behavior is determined by hidden/unconscious desires. it has made insights on dreams, childhood development, motivation etc.

Defense Mechamisims

1. repression: pushing very anxious thoughts out of consciousness, keeping them unconscious. Ex: Forgetting about something tragic happening because of current anxiety. 2. Rationalization: logical explanations for attitudes, beliefs, or behavior in place of the real unconscious reasons Ex: Saying you fired for not "kissing up" but you were actually b/c of poor performance 3. Reaction formation: preventing feelings or ideas from being directly expressed by using other feelings or ideas. ex: having a bias against a particular race or culture and then embracing that race or culture to the extreme 4. Displacement: redirecting aggressive or other unacceptable urges away from the intended targets toward more acceptable ones. Ex: yelling at your spouse after a fight with your boss. 5. Projection: perceiving your own aggressive and other unacceptable urges not in yourself but in others. EX: when losing an argument, you state "You're just Stupid 6. Regression: pulling into the unconscious Ex: sitting in a corner and crying after hearing bad news

ID

An unconscious part of your mind that contains the basic drives for reproduction, survival, and aggression --pleasure principle because if it feels good we do it sooner than later --Example: An infant shows id from crying when they want something
