What do you think are the three most important events in the history of the Internet? For each event, say what happened and when, who was involved (if anyone), and why it was important. Use complete sentences.

ARPANET This stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. It was established in the 1969 as a Defense Department research project. Its purpose was to create a communication system that might survive a nuclear attack. TCP/IP It was created in the 1970s by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn. It is the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol which are rules that regulate the packets that are transmitted. They are the standard networking protocols. World Wide Web In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee created the WWW. He created HTTP protocols, HTML, the first web browser software and the first we server software. He also created a web browser that allowed a user to navigate through pages of information.

There are many ways you can get a website online. At the beginning of her video series on getting your site online, Christina Truong describes three categories for the options you have to get your site online. Name two of those categories.

Custom-built website HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Ruby or Python Website builders Squarspace, wix or weebly CMS: Content management systems Wordpress, ExpressionEngine, Drupal or Joomla!

What are the strengths and weaknesses of electricity, light, and radio as mediums for transferring information?

Electricity Pro: cheap Con: signal loss light Pro: really fast, no signal loss Con: Expensive, hard to work with Radio Pro: Totally mobile Con: Short range

Describe three differences between hosted website products and traditional (self-hosted) systems.

Hosted websites often provide the server, storage space and software to build the website while self-hosted sites have to find all that. Self-hosted websites can be more customizable as you have control of the software while hosted websites (like Wordpress.com) have limits. If you are unhappy with a hosted website and want to stop using that service, you essentially have to start over. However, with a self-hosted site, it is easier to switch hosts.

Who really owns the Internet? Explain your answer.

No one owns the internet. The internet is not a tangible thing, but an idea. Therefore, it cannot be owned. However, the internet can be regulated.

Explain three key differences between posts and pages in WordPress.

Posts are published in a stream while pages are static. Posts are things that would be more associated with a social media post while pages are not. Pages belong on the main menu while posts do not.

Pick three of the following hosting types. Describe each one and say how it is different than the others. Choose from: shared, dedicated, virtual, VPS, cloud

Shared multiple websites are stored and run on the same server. share resources like memory and disk space. Like renting a room in a house Dedicated your site is the only one on the server. The cost will be higher since you'll be renting the whole server. Like owning house and land VPS multiple sites share the same server, but there are less sites per server than shared hosting. uses its own resources so increased traffic on one site, won't effect its neighboring site. Like condo or townhouse Cloud operating across multiple web servers that work together rather than just one server,

Who invented most of the elements of the World Wide Web that we use today?

Tim Berners Lee

You just got a job with a startup company. (Or, for strategic communicators: your agency has a new client that is a startup company.) The company is deciding whether to build its website in-house or hire a developer. What three questions would you ask to help them decide? Explain your answer.

What's your budget? Is it affordable to hire a developer? What are your needs? Will your website need upkeep?
