Louisa May Alcott Family

Her father became a teacher after being a philosopher. He got into a lot of trouble as a teacher, he thought girls and boys should have equal education opportunities. He refused to use corporal punishment (hitting kids). Abolishment movement - Both of her parents played a big part in this. The parents wanted their daughters to pursue their dreams. Followed in her fathers footsteps in wanting to be a writer and an a believer in the abolishment movement.

Horatio Alger

(Rags to Riches story associates with him and became famous for these types of book) about boys that live on the streets to working their way up to something better, middle class even. *Grew up in new England in the New York area and went to Harvard studied to be a minster and didn't work out. He was given an opportunity to write a boys book for kids in a children's magazine.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich

A poet, and editor of a magazine, a very notable and literary author. He wrote one book, and It changed the nature of children's literature. Traveled in literary circles and became really good friends with Mark Twain. Knew each other and read each others books. The book was "The story of a bad boy" came out in 1869

Mark Twain

Real name was Samuel Clemens 1835-1910. Born premature and grew up in Florida, Missouri, not expected to live. He went to a small school in the town, a good student but he was a boy that enjoyed outdoors and was a natural leader. Doing well and had friends and his childhood ambition was to be a riverboat pilot. . Mark Twain began to work for his brothers newspaper and dropped from school. He became a type setter for the news paper. He moved to several towns being a Typesetter but he still wanted to be a riverboat pilot, it took him years to save up enough money to get trained and he eventually became one.

Tom Sawyer

Very clever (look back to whitewashing fence scene) You see how milipuative he is and he uses reverse psychology. In the very beginning is a very self-centered child but one of the things about him was is that he doesn't like play by the rules, he likes to go his own way, he still cares about the prizes, winning and things like that.

The youngest son settles in new york and the child grows up there. The first two sons die and the third son dies too. The elderly man sends for his grandson (Little Lord Fauntleroy) and he turns the man into a much kinder person.

Louisa May Alcott 1832-1888

Born in Pennsylvania and moved to Concord in Massachusetts, an amazing little town in the 19th century. She was surrounded by writers her whole life. She didn't want to live the typical life of a girl in the 19th century, didn't wanna get married or have kids, she wanted to be the greatest American writer. Very much a tom boy, liked to do what the boys did, outdoorsy and athletic. She signed up as a nurse in the civil war, for a month. She would write a letter to her parents everyday telling them what she did each day. After she had been working at the hospital for a month and then got really sick, she got better from being sick but he medicine they gave her lasted forever, mercury gave her poisoning and it hits the nervous system. She ended up having to write more girls books even though she didn't even like girls. Became one of the best payed authors at the time. Her declining health made her feel awful towards the end of her life. After her death her impact continued on.

His father was a speculator, not good with money. Things didn't go well for the Clemmons family in those years, train didn't come through so they moved to a town on the Mississippi River called Hannibal, spent his childhood there. His father ended up getting a job known as justice of the peace, earning them more financial security. During his Teenage years things started to go downhill, Father made a bad business decision by losing a title to the house. The town doctor felt sorry for the family and allowed the family to live with him. Shortly, after moving in Mr. Clemmons became deathly ill. The doctor asked Mrs. Clemmons if he could do an autopsy on Mr. Clemmons and she said yes. Mark Twain watched the autopsy through a peep hole, and from that point on his mistrusted doctors. When the father died he had an older son that had already grown up, the older son came to Hannibal and got them the house again because he had money

Frances Hodgson Burnett 1849-1924

She is claimed in both Britain and America as an author. Born in Great Britain Into a wealthy family, however her father died when she was 4 years old, he died unexpectedly. They weren't prepared to run the factory so it went out of business so they lost their money. She constantly thinks about when her life when it was a luxury. Her mom's brother was worried about them and told them if they went to Tennessee he would help them out. Spent her teenage years growing up there, she wanted to become a writer and started that in her later teens writing for magazines. She met a man, married him and they had 2 boys. She wanted a girl but never got one. She tried to treat her 2nd son like a girl. She left her husband and began to live a life where she can relive and a life like she had in her early life. While she was on her way to England, her oldest son became deathly ill so she had to go back to the states. He dies and that created a crisis for her, she felt guilty and went through a period of self examination. She began to say that the fancy parties doesn't really mean anything but what does is to be close to family and nature. She ended up changing her life to become a better mother and examine her own values.

The very beginning of children literature, a Puritan family that had a daughter and they knew they were supposed to be stern with her but they weren't very strict like most on her. They realized they went all wrong and they took her pretty dresses and started making her do chores. The girl at 13 does not like it all, and the devil shows up in the room and he agrees with her complaining. They come up with a plan to kill her parents, which was to poison them. The angel tells the dad to not eat the breakfast. The father doesn't eat the breakfast and gave it to the family dog. The girl then collapses into a coma and they are preparing to bury her. She has a "dream" and is visiting hell and heaven's gate. They put her in the grave and then the girl wakes up and is banging on the coffin.

The Secret Garden 1911

Wrote it as a girls book, vey daring and different from the others before it. Mary had servants and was a brat. Mary was left alone when her parents and many servants die. While she is by herself she is trying to plant a garden, it symbolizes this desire to live. They find her and take her to the local minster and the kids make fun of her. They send her to her uncle in great Britain, she's placed in this estate surrounded by the moors. She learns to be more self-sufficient by Martha. Finds out about her uncle and hears of the secret garden, that was his wife's that dies in the garden. He's so mad at the garden and locks the garden up. She wishes to bring life to things, such as Colin, she uses nature to heal him. In the end she is happy for Colin and her uncle because they are happy now.

an outsider like them but in a different way. He is angry at the people in St. Petersburg because he is not treated fairly, known as a half-breed and he's not accepted so he is angry.
