Read the excerpt below from Little Women and answer the question. "Which would Mademoiselle choose if she had her will?" asked Esther, who always sat near to watch over and lock up the valuables. "I like the diamonds best, but there is no necklace among them, and I'm fond of necklaces, they are so becoming. I should choose this if I might," replied Amy, looking with great admiration at a string of gold and ebony beads from which hung a heavy cross of the same. "I, too, covet that, but not as a necklace. Ah, no! To me, it is a rosary, and as such, I should use it as a good Catholic," said Esther, eyeing the handsome thing wistfully. "Is it meant to use as you use the string of good-smelling wooden beads hanging over your glass?" asked Amy. "Truly, yes, to pray with. It would be pleasing to the saints if one used so fine a rosary as this, instead of wearing it as a vain bijou." This conversation between Amy and Aunt March's maid, Esther, suggests to the reader that ____. -Esther is a devout Catholic. -Esther prefers plain clothing to fancy jewelry. -Esther thinks the Marches are godless. -Esther dislikes Aunt March.

Read the excerpt below from Little Women and answer the question. "Hadn't you rather have her marry a rich man?" asked Jo, as her mother's voice faltered a little over the last words. "Money is a good and useful thing, Jo, and I hope my girls will never feel the need of it too bitterly, nor be tempted by too much. I should like to know that John was firmly established in some good business, which gave him an income large enough to keep free from debt and make Meg comfortable. I'm not ambitious for a splendid fortune, a fashionable position, or a great name for my girls. If rank and money come with love and virtue, also, I should accept them gratefully, and enjoy your good fortune, but I know, by experience, how much genuine happiness can be had in a plain little house, where the daily bread is earned, and some privations give sweetness to the few pleasures. I am content to see Meg begin humbly, for if I am not mistaken, she will be rich in the possession of a good man's heart, and that is better than a fortune." One of the lessons that Alcott attempts to teach throughout Little Women is that of the value of hard work to earn one's place in the world. Thinking of examples from the real world, from the story, and specifically using Mrs. March's words how would you differentiate between happiness in material goods and happiness in being genuine? For your answer, write at least 100 words.

Material things will never bring happiness to any home even though I will live in a world controlled by material things; however, even with the excess of the material, there will be no contentment. The genuine feel of happiness comes from a family with love and care. Most people run to materials things forgetting that it is not the sole bearer of happiness. Some people go as far as sacrificing their loved ones because of material possessions. Money can't buy happiness, money buys you clothing, food, water, toys, and trinkets. Those things can make you happy, but items can't be filled with happiness. People can make you happy. Friends and family make you happy and they make you feel loved. According to Mrs. March, wealth is happiness that is contented. word count: 130
