Chiaroscuro

An art technique in which the artist creates a lot of contrast between light and shadow areas of the picture, which makes objects look three dimensional and draws the viewer's eye to the subject. Sometimes looks like a spotlight has been shined on a subject. Used in Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper to draw the viewer's eye directly to Jesus in the center of the image.

Cangiante

Creates depth and realism by using a change in color or hue to depict light and shadows.

Unione

Eliminates harsh outlines by blending colors into one another. Used often by the artist Raphael, this technique uses vibrant colors instead of muted tones.

Sfumato

The creation of a shape in a painting without using abrupt outlines, achieved by the blending of one tone into another. Used by Leonardo Da Vinci in his Mona Lisa.
